What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and is also alternatively known as Internet Telephony. VoIP allows you to make phone calls over your ISP (Internet Service Provider) connection, instead of your phone company, by sending voice (data) over the internet.
How does VoIP work?
Current telephone system relies on reliable but inefficient method for connecting calls called ‘Circuit’ Switching. When a call is made between two persons, a ‘circuit’ is established and the connection is maintained for the entire duration of the call with a dedicated wire connection between two persons. A long distance call costs high, because of the copper wire that connects all the way from one point to another.
