Doctor Makes You Wait For Potential Bad News - Has This Happened To You?

A close friend of mine got a call today from his doctor. He has been on painkillers for a few months waiting to go for back surgery and they did blood tests at his last visit. They called him today to say they wanted to "discuss" with him the results of the blood work, but the doctor is on vacation for a week, so he can't see her for 10 days.
This makes me mad cause he's all worried now. He knows the painkillers can affect his liver, so he's wondering if his liver is fried. It can't have anything to do with the upcoming surgery for his back since those are two different doctors.
I don't think it's right for doctors to do this. If it's something of that much concern that they need to talk to you, they should be able to see you within a day, otherwise don't call or anythign until you can do that.
Has this ever happened to you? How do you feel?

That's not right! Don't they have a Dr who is covering or anything? I would demand that somebody see me and tell me something - that's too long to wait.
I doubt that his liver is fried, but his liver enzymes are probably up. He may need to change the pain med's he's on. That happened to my husband -- too much tylenol going in (in the pain meds) maybe. What's he taking?

He has been taking soma for muscle relaxants and percodan for a while. They changed medicine at this last appt. when they drew blood, not sure what he's on now. But the blood work would have been on the percodan/soma combo
