So far I've had pretty bad luck finding really good novels in the Buffy line. Mostly I'm going through the list in order from the beginning, but sometimes I'll pick up a more recent one if it really catches my interest. By and large, I find the novels to be poorly written (or mediocre at best) and to have so many mistakes (incorrect use of mythological creatures, continuity errors, characters not having the right "voice", etc) that I just can't enjoy them.
One notable exception is the fairly recent "Go Ask Malice: A Slayer's Diary" by Joseph Levy. This one is written as if it were Faith's diary from the time before she came to the series. It follows her through a year or two before she is called as a Slayer, finding her Watcher, being called, and of course her first run-in with Kakistos. It didn't completely blow my socks off, but it was an enjoyable read, it stayed within canon, and it gave some really interesting insights into Faith's character and why she made the choices that she did later in life.
Another plus is that it seems to be pretty easy to find in bookstores right now. I recommend giving it a try.

Well the good news is there will be more story! Starting in March there will be a monthly comic, written by Joss Whedon that is Buffy Season 8 (in comic book form). Check out the Dark Horse Comics (www.darkhorse.com) for more details.
That said I have read a few of the novels. I've read Tales of the slayers, and that was ok. Rather than being abut Buffy, it's about the slayers before Buffy. Some of the stories are good. Others, are just "meh".
I also read one of the Spike and Dru books "Pretty Maids all in a row". This also takes place before Buffy is the slayer. There is actually a wikipedia article about this book if you want somemore information. Again, I found the story and writing to be just kinda "meh". What I didn't like about it was that it went out of cannon by having Spike kill a third slayer sometime between the chinese slayer and Nikki Wood. I guess felt like that was just a silly addition. I'm traditional that way.
I haven't read Blackout, but it sounds interesting.
Thus far my expereince would be that no one writes the buffyverse like Joss. So I'll just want for the comics in March. It's only a week or two away!

Spike is my favorite, so I think I'll stay away from "Pretty Maids" just so I'm not outraged by the changing of history. A 3rd slayer...that's impossible. I think he would have mentioned her in "Fool For Love"
I'm waiting for the comic as well, but maybe I'll wait for the trade. I've got twins now, and that doesn't leave much time to collect comics, unfortunately.
Thanks for your post :)

I'm a big Spike fan too. And I was outraged! :-)
I think that book found it's way to GoodWill as soon as it was finished. I think I'll get the monthly comics, but will probably also get the trades...I like trades for ease of reading, and hopfully I'll want to read this again and again.

I had not heard about them, but after reading this I think the only one that has my interest is the one that is written as Faith's diary.
I am definately interested in the comic series, though. I really miss this show, and any form is better than none!

I've read alot of them. One thing though, check the book reviews and the insides with a skimming before buying them.
I bought the last season novelisation, 'Chosen' and it was amazingly bad. There were tons of spelling errors and overall badness even if it was directly translated from the script.
The Willows Files, Xander Years and so on are pretty good.

I've read quite a few Buffy books, somewhere around thirty five. And all of them atleast twice. I would defiantly recommend any of them. The only ones I'd say to stay away from are Heat and Seven Crows. Other than that they are all excellent.
The Unseen Trilogy is a nice Buffy/Angel crossover. Its cool to see the new characters from Angel interacting with the Scoobies.
My favorite Buffy book is Sins of the Father. Pike returns in this book, and I've always been a big fan of Pike. I would defiantly suggest that one.
Mortal Fear, Go Ask Malice, Portal Through Time, Child of The Hunt, Obsidian Fate, those are just a few good ones that I recommend.
