I know allowance can be good for kids but do you have a reward system that works well for your children that rewards them for being good and doing their chores without being told?

I've found that letting my son set a goal to work towards works pretty well. He not only does his own chores in exchange for either money (small change usually) or a toy (after several chores), but has also found out that he can recycle cans for money and will chase down anyone with an empty aluminum can. He's already started a saving account at our bank. Now I ask him at the start of each week what his goal for the week will be. His choices are 1) savings account 2)a specific toy or 3)charity. He's still a little slow on picking charity, but is pretty good about the other two.

I find gold stars on a chart work for my son, and when he's got a good amount i reward him with a magazine or something else small that he wants. My daughter just gets an allowance now as she's much older.

For now what works for me is nothing! My children are 8, 5.5 and 2. They do things for me just for the response they get from me. I make a big deal of how wonderful they are and how happy they've made me when they do something for me. It's really sweet really. And they're so proud of themselves when I praise them up. Sometimes a little praise can go a long way. Good luck on deciding how you will reward your little ones.

Mine choose their own between.....getting an extra hour of computer or nintendo,a dollar added to their weekly allowance or to stay up an extra hour before bed....they always choose the extra hour for bed....LOL.....this choice is only given on weekends

I think that a good reward is what they really want. If it's something reasonable. If you give a child a treat (snack) I think that's another good motivator other than an allowance. It's worth a try!
