What are you experiences of anti- depressants?

I have suffered from depression and anxiety for years, and have tried a few different anti-depressants.Seroxat seems to work quite well for me but the only problem is that it makes my sleeping patterns very erratic, and also gives me nightmares.I am currently trying Citalopram which has improved my sleep, but I seem to be really wound up and irritable ALL the time.I would be very interested to hear others experiences with anti depressants. Are you for or against? Is it possible to deal with depression without them?

I'm not a big fan of medications and think they're sometimes over-prescribed. But in a lot of cases a person isn't able to have a good quality life unless they are on medications. I had to take an Prozac after the birth of my second child because of severe post-partum depression. It worked well and I didn't have to take it for too long. Years later I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and I now have to take medication (not an anti-depressant, a mood stabilizer) for that otherwise I'd be miserable. But there are parts of the bipolar that I deal with in other ways such as through proper nutrition, exercise, art and writing. There was a time not long ago that I took the anti-depressant Remeron which worked okay and helped me with sleep but it also increased my appetite which I didn't like. I don't take that anymore though. I think it's possible for people with mild depression to find relief without medication, but no one should have to deal with it on their own. If it's affecting someone's life then they should seek some kind of support or treatment because once they do then life can become so much better. I just wanted to say also, that I hope you're able to find something that works for you and be sure to let your doctor know about the side-effects of the Citalopram. Sometimes there's a lot of trial and error involved in finding the right meds.
