what is scam or spam.(what ever the neme is)

i have been hearing for a long of time that some sites are just spam or scam.whats the meaning of it.what does it do.does it harm our computer?does it harm our documnets and files.Any one please tell me the following questions and some more information about it.

Spam is sending unsolicited emails. We are seeing them a lot in our inboxes. People are sending information we haven't asked, and we don't need at all. The best is to delete them without reading and block the sender.
Scam is worse, scammers want your money. It's when somebody is trying to sell you a product which may look good at first but if you pay for it you'll discover that you have actually paid for nothing, and to get the information you really needed you have to pay more and more. Or is somebody promising you big benefit when you join some programs (you have to pay for joining, of course), and then they just disappear with your money.
