What's wrong with us?

I recently had a xtian ask me this question:
"If there is no such thing as sin, then what is wrong with humans that they would still commit evil acts?"
My first thought was that this is a loaded question. Why must we assume that anything is wrong?
But perhaps something is wrong. I mean, even if you think drugs should be legalized for instance, it is still a good idea to avoid having them just to avoid the consequences.
My response was that I thought the two primary causes are probably ignorance and desperation. However, neither of these conditions are intrinsic to the human race and both are preventable.
What do you guys think? Is there something wrong with us that causes us to commit crimes?

It because world today is not fair. I just feel it's unfair somehow. Why we born in poor family. Why we born in such bad family. Why and why make this world unfair for certain people.
