I did not watch CNN's program, but as to your question, hip-hop is a culture and lifestyle based on unify against inner-city violence in its inception. The artform developed through this lifestyle, thus spawning. What is poisoned is the industry today known as rap.(not hip-hop mind you) Also you have to look at the fact that the music is controlled by people with the bottom line as their interest and so any participate who enters into the industry as a rapper would be easily led to believe that this bottom line interest(money, power, and prestiege) would be swayed by this industry giant.(the recording and media marketing companies) There are plenty of rappers who do perform the music itself as a artform, but will not be able to have their pushed into the mainstream media's forfrontbecause of this bottom line. So yes hip-hop is art, but the music is poisoned unfortunately.

Generally, hip hop is poison. I think you can do hip hop and not be offensive, but I don't buy the repeated statement that hip hop is art. Look at all the gang related shootings. What do they listen to? Hip hop and rap.
