Do you feel bad when selecting a best response?

Selecting a best response to a discussion leaves me feeling bad for those that are not chosen. I am delighted when I see so many responding to my discussions. So many leave lengthy responses and put a lot of effort into them.
My idea is that the community as a whole should decide on the best response rather than the author of the discussion. This is something that I will be presenting to MyLot as an option.
Or maybe we could rate each response on a scale of 1-5 rather than choose best response.
What are your feelings on this?

I even look at the discussions others have started, and imagine which one I think is the best response. Maybe something different would work. I am usually open to change, very flexible. I do rate on other people's discussions, when I visit them. It would not be too hard to say that whoever got the most + marks should get best responses.

Atleast it is good that we can rate them all with +. Sometimes I feel that there is more than one best response in a discussion. 2 or more that both have great answers. I then try to see if they replied to any other of my discussions and if they have I will rate them in that one instead - unless there is another great great answer =)

That would be nice if users could vote on the best response. A rating system would be nice.
I see it like this: All users could vote on the best response, not giving them a number- just rating them as the best. (though being wary of people voting for their referrals or friends would be an issue). Other users would see a rating by that persons contribution to the discussion as a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 (or even 1-3). That would show the discussions favorites and would require more people to thoroughly read what each person wrote. Though it would be a shame if someone was voted best and then another contributor came along that had a better response. It would be good to be able to vote on more than one user as best so that if another response came along that people liked they could vote on that one as well.
Though I am sure there could be other better ways to go about it. I like the idea in general of allowing more than one person to decide who gave the best response.

I love the idea of a rating scale, but realistically can you see it working here? People don't even use the (-) and (+) ratings appropriately, so how would they be with a scale of 1-5 for each response? I would like to see them do away with choosing a best response altogether; as you said, there are generally several very good responses that could all be the best response, and it is usually very difficult to choose one. Maybe they should eliminate the (-) ratings and continue with the (+) ratings; whoever gets the most (+) ratings from the people reading the discussion would be the "best response". There are a lot of good ideas from users here on how to modify the whole rating system, and I'm sure that myLot is considering them all. Whatever they come up with, one thing is for sure: it would have to be fairer than what we have now. The stars sounded like a great idea, but they have turned out to be a disaster. The best response is a great idea for the people who actually read their discussions, but just this morning I responded to a discussion where the best response was chosen hours after the discussion was posted. When I looked at the person's profile, they had this particular person chosen as best response for every single discussion, and his discussions did the same for her. They're boosting each other's ratings and earnings while we're reading our discussions and agonizing over which one to choose!

laurie, I think that the members of mylot picking a best response is a good idea, but see to problems with it. First most people on here don't seem to read the responses others have left, especially when there are many pages, so a best response further into lets say page 4 or 5 would rarely be marked. The other draw back is that some discussions when asking for advise only the discussion starter can say what is the best for them. Just my 2 cents worth no disrespect intended. :)
As for the 2 members choosing only each other for best responses, I would copy both of the url's and send mylot a pm to let them no. As far as I'm concerned that is an abuse of the system and I'm sure that I'm not alone in that feeling. :)

Your idea of scale 1-5 it not bad either. In 1-5 scale the person who get '1' might feel bad. But you have to select a best response amongst all. The persons's answer which is selected as 'best answer' must feel that he is first amongst equals, so it is not that bad to select 'best answer'. I feel that 'Thanks' and acknoweldgements and brief comments must be given to all those who have responded. The person who has responded to a question must have spent time understanding a questions and must have put in his best efforts to reply to a question/discussion. It is also a good idea if 'voting' is done..............but in that case it will get bit longer to select the 'best response'

I often am in a dilemma when choosing a best response. I get so many good ones and it is a tough choice. I'm not sure if letting others choose a best response on our discussions is a good idea, because users might be biased and could well mark their own responses as the best..lol And the scale rating is going to take up time, and if someone accidentally hit a 1 instead of 5, then ratings get messed up. I think the simple +/- rating system is just fine.

I understand this. I have some very good friends who give me very responses, and sometimes it's very choosing. People put in links, include photos, etc.
The rating idea of one to five is probably a great suggestion.

Yes, sometimes i wish i could choose more than one best response, but there should only be one best response. I agree with your idea of ranking comments. There were times i kind of regret having already given a best response too soon because afterwards there are some people who gave more sound answers than my choosen best response.

i know i have the same problem..but one good thing is that the good responses usually come from all my regulars lol..so i can kinda share them out along the way which does make things a little more easier..i try to be fair..it is very hard..but at least i am here to stay..so alot of people will get a lot of best responses i hope lol.

you're right...it may happen that there are so many beautiful asnwers that it is very difficulto to choose only one...after making a choice I feel a bit bad and I would tell everybody..I do thank you everyone of you for your posting here..I mean it..I do thank you for sharing your opinion and writing to me and I am sorry I can give only one best...I hope that seeing that we all know the rules nobody is going to be angry at me for my choice...and I have learnt that I can rate each answers and now I am paying great attentions and I am rating with a positive mark everybody...doing so I am sure I can express my inner feeling to them and do what I am not allowed to do in another way.

I think at the end of the day it comes down to personal choice. I don't feel bad in choosing a best response because I rate all the others positive anyway.
It's my way of saying Thanks!
The whole rating from one to five sounds like a good idea, its one I could live with.
As for the community choosing which one is the best answer, I'm not too sure about that. What if there are multiple people with the same number of votes? How would a best answer be chosen then? I still think that should be a personal choice for the person who wrote the discussion.
Just my two cents :)

Yes, there are times that I feel bad when selecting a best response because there are so many responses to choose from...that I would like to be able to give out several best responses.
I have always thought that myLot should allow a best response per page. :)
This way, the more responses a person gets, the more the best responses one is allowed to select.
This would really help out for those discussions that get 80 to a 100 responses.

It is sometimes quite difficult to give a best response and I would love to give everybody a best response. Yes, your 1-5 seems like a good idea, as then we could be fair to everybody who responds. I wonder if myLot would ever consider this!

No, I feel bad like you, but what you are suggesting is a little too complicated and time-consuming, Mylot only pays for one best response - there is no payscale for 1-5 and I dont like the community idea either. I wouldnt want someone who has a vendetta against me to come and rate me all bad marks in others' discussions. Its your personal discussion, and responders are writing to impress YOU.

Ohhh...I love the rating scale idea! I had never thought of that. I am the same as you, though. Some discussions are very easy to pick a BEST RESPONSE, but some are so hard and, like you, I feel bad for picking only one. I love the rating idea. I sure hope Mylots listen to this suggestion!

Good morning, while I think that you make a great suggestion I can't help but see flaws in it. I mean no disrespect, in my statement. I would prefer that mylotters/mylotians not choose the best response for me, as on some of my discussions only I know what might personally work for me when getting advise. As for the rating of 1-5 while that is also a great idea to many people don't read all the response prior to responding so those would never get rated and the best response could be as I said before on page 4, 5 or 6.
I do have a couple of ideas myself, that I will share with you and you can tell me what you think, I'm open to holes being poked into my suggestions, lol.
First on the best response, I to think that it's hard to pick sometimes as you get so many best responses to a poplar discussion. I don't think that a best response should be able to be picked until a couple of things have been met, 1 that the discussion hits a certain number of responses and 2, that it should have a time limit say you can't pick until after 48 hours, picking a best response on a response that was received in the first hours of the discussion is wrong, the person has not given ample time or respect to other people responding. I also think that in cases of popular discussions that you be able to give 3 best responses these can either be equal or can be on a scale of 1 to 3, members choose. :)
One other thought comes to mind when having so many great responses and you can't choose, that you would be able to in some way ask readers to rate the best response for you, but I fear that, that to could be abused, and as said before since most members don't read through all the responses to many great responses would be over looked.
I do feel bad when I to receive so many great responses, and have a hard time choosing, but I do like the idea that one or more is picked. As always this is just my 2 cents worth. :)

YOu are not being disrespectful at all. I appreciate your feedback. I too thought of many flaws in my idea after I posted the discussion. It gets frustrating when you think about it all. I do believe that there should be another way of rating discussions.

I had thought of something else after posting that and I think I've seen it before also and that's when rating a negative it should work the same way as abuse, that you need to give an explanation, I think that would cut down on the negatives for the reason of just disagreeing. The rating system if used properly could work very well. :)
Thank you for the honor of best response as their were many to choose from.

I totally agree with you on the negative rating, people need to be held accountable for giving out the rating.
