ADHD meds form of cocaine???

Last night I posted a couple of discussions about my son being overly hyperactive at age 5. Well, I had a couple of people tell me that the meds are a form of cocaine. I also read that somewhere on the web during my research...can't remember where now. Anyhow, my question is...is this true? And, how can a form of cocaine--which makes you hyper and stimulates you help an already overly stiumlated child? I am very confused. Thank you

Reading some of your responses I had to come on this discussion and give you some information from a well known pychiatrist Peter Breggin, although he has caused alot of controversy, it is worth reading. Also theres a link to Dr Phil. I watched this show on ADHD and I found it very interesting. http://www.breggin.com/congress.html http://www.breggin.com/ritalinconfirmingthehazards.html http://www.drphil.com/shows/show/371

you must not take advise of them. the available medications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are as follows; atomoxetine, clonidine , methylphenidate and others. you must take your son to a psychiatrist for better options for treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

This is not true. Where ever you got this information is wrong. My child has been on meds for 3 years now, and they really do work. There is no way I would give her something like that if this were true.

What I have seen said about the chemical family is that Ritalin is an amphetamine, which is normally a stimulant. It is a derivative, in synthetic form of dexedrine. The way I understand it is that the stimulant speeds up the portion of the brain that maintains control, in people with ADHD. I am not going to insist that I am right on this, but that is what I understood when researching dexedrine online, this year. Adderall is a second generation, so to speak, of ritalin. I believe that Strattera may not work on the same action, or be a stimulant medication. Talk to a pharmacist, or go to a reliable source online.

They are referring to the fact that if people who do not have ADHD take medications (simulants) used to treat ADHD they will get a high similar to speed. I personally don't know what this is like because I have adult ADD and when I take my medication I feel focused and calm. My mind doesn't jump all over the place like it does when I am not on medication. I wouldn't be worried I am sure your son's doctor knows what he/she is doing. Just keep a close eye on your son the first couple of days he is on a new medication to make sure. Also watch out for a nasty side effect, diarreha, you may want to make you stay home the first day he is on meds for conveniece of going to the bathroom. Hope this helps you out!

Oh my, I have never heard this before. Talk to your pharmasist. They will tell you the truth and then if they are rumors, they will be put to rest once and for all and It it is true, you will know that too.
