Do you take the time out to give your child a head start before the new school year?I have a son in second and since the summer before kindergarden I have started teaching him whats to come in the next school year.I can tell it helps because his grades are always A'S AND B'S . I don't ever push him to make good grades but I do show him how doing well in school can pay off. By allowence for every book he reads and makes a 100 on the test. His school has a program that if you read three books and make 3 100's in a row then you move up a level in reading.I love that program becasue it shows them how hard work pays. They get rewards like homework passes for getting a 100 on a certain test they take once a month. I apply these same principles to him during the summer with my own ideas of learning for the new school year. What about you?Do you do anything or just let them play it out?

I do with my daughter what my parents did for me. My mom would save my homework from the entire year and make me redo it over the summer. It helped me out a lot.

Well that is the right thing you do so that they remain in touch with studying. Well I do not have kids but if I would have had I must have done the same thing.

I like to work with my daughter in the summer also. Not as much as during the school year because she doesn't have homwork, but I like to have her read everyday to keep that skill up and she writes out the grocery list before we go shopping.

Yes I try to teach my daughter as much as possible during the summer. All last summer we spent alot of time learning how to read and write all the letters and how to write out her name. She is only four and in Jr. Kindergarten, she is considerably more advanced then the majority of her classmates and her teacher loves her printing capabilities. During the school year I have continued doing some teaching when I can, but I do let up a bit more so that I am not taking away from what she learns at school. Once summer starts I will pick up and continue teaching her to read a little more. She is getting better and better and she can recognize a number of words. So far during the school year we have been working on counting, she can count to 200 with only assistance at the 10's, and even those are getting better. She counted up to 59 without any help whatsoever. I did find it amusing that her report card said she was capable of counting up to 15 on her own when we have been doing that for ages now. Ok enough bragging about how smart my daughter is ;)
