We went to a lunch today and there were a couple loaves of French bread left over that we brought home... That means French Toast for breakfast in the morning! Yumm! Here's how we make ours: 6 eggs 6 Tbsp. milk 1/2 tsp. salt several drops vanilla 12 slices of French Bread butter for cooking In a mixing bowl combine the eggs, milk, salt and vanilla with 3 Tbsp. water and beat lightly. Dip the bread slices into this mixture, one at a time, making sure both sides are well coated. Let the excess drip off. In a heavy skillet with an generous amount of very hot melted butter brown the toast well on both sides. Serve hot with maple syrup, honey, sugar, jam or dessert sauces. (Serves 6).

I have got to say that the best french toast that I've ever had is from this Cafe in San Diego called Cafe 999 (I think). It's downtown SD. Anyway, they take the french toast and stuff it with peanut butter and banana. Add syrup to it, and it's freakin' fanstastic! I've tried to make it myself at home, but it didn't quite work. MMMmmm..I'm salivating just thinking about it.

Not sure what you mean by "stuff it with peanut butter and banana". Are there two slices of bread or just a slice in the middle to put the peanut butter and banana? I think I'd like the peanut butter, but not the banana, but thanks for the idea!

I absolutely love french toast. Too bad my husband doesn't like it as much as I do. Anyway, have a question- is it better to use french bread or is regular bread ok?

You can use regular bread... we make it that way most of the time.. but when we have the French bread, it just makes it taste better.

Wow that sounds really good! I was planning on making some tomarrow myself. I think ill adjust my recipie a bit and add some things into it. Because that soounds SOOO Good. Usually i put cinnamon sugar into my egg batter. I wonder how that would taste with the vanilla in there.... MMMMMMM.

I add cinnamon sugar to my egg batter sometimes too. It gives it a little extra flavor. My husband also likes to add a dash of nutmeg. That adds to it too... Yummm!

This sounds good. It has been a while since I have had French toast. This makes a great meal any time of the day. I don't recall ever using regular French bread. I will have to try it.

Oh does that sound heavenly! My teens would love it. Sadly, we are all dieting so it isn't something I should make. Perhaps as a special treat once we have all lost 5-6 pounds?! I suppose I could try to make it with my lo-cal bread, egg-beaters and splenda? It wouldn't taste nearly as good as yours sounds though...

Oh that recipe sounds so good! I was CRAVING french toast this morning, but didn't feel like cooking so I sent hubby out to get some Aunt Jemima's frozen french toast (I know) and guess what he came back with? French toast sticks! Yuck!

French toast is a favorite in our home and I was actually planning on serving that for dinner tonight! (Breakfast is hard to come buy here unless it is just cereal, so we often have those type foods for dinner instead.) Anyway, your recipe sounds delicious!

This sounds like a great French Toast recipe. The only thing I would add is when it is hot off the skillet we put peanut butter on it then maple syrup. My family is peanut butter fanatics.
