A tsunami (pronounced soo-nah-mee or tsoo-nah-mee [ IPA or ]) is a natural phenomenon consisting of a series of waves generated when water in a lake or the sea is rapidly displaced on a massive scale. Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions and large meteorite impacts all have the potential to generate a tsunami. The effects of a tsunami can range from unnoticeable to devastation.....

Its a japanese word meaning "huge tidal wave". If you are awre of the tidal wave which hit the islands of the indian ocean on the 26th of December 2004. As I am a Sri Lankan I sure know how it was what it did to our precious land. It's not something which I would not even dream of seeing even in my wildest of dreams.

Tsunami (from Japanese word: "Tsu" (Harbor) and "nami" (wave)) is a series of wave created when the ocean is rapidly displaced on a massive scale. The main causes could be earth quakes, mass movements above/below water when the sea floor deforms.
The most terrible tsunami in 21st century was on 26 December 2004,an undersea earthquake of 9.3 on the Earth Quake Magnitude caused a huge tsunami (2nd largest in history) and hit Aceh, Sumatra Island in Indonesia (my country:) )and killed more than 230,000 people. The province Aceh was swept everything to the ground, leaving nothing but corpses and orphans and homeless people.
