I found oil painting very convinient. I found it easier than water color. Specially mending is easier in water paints. what do you say?

I paint with pastels and really like it. It is workable and doesn't make much mess, so the clean-up is practically non existant. My art teacher, Vivian Ripley, even has a water method with pastels, which can give it a water color look. [I don't use that method because it requires a more expensive paper and I try to keep my expenses down, at least until I find a way to sell more of my paintins.] My mother worked in oils and acrylic. She didn't care as much for watercolor because it wasn't as "workable". She wanted to be able to redo things. Reworking with pastels is possible, but you have to be careful how you pick up the color from the paper so that it doesn't look reworked. Anyone else work in pastels?

One of the benefits of Oils is that one can go back to the piece and still "work" it within a reasonable time span. Acrylics and water colors especially don't offer as much flexibilty. Certainly water based mediums with decent skill levels are beautiful as finished pieces as well, which is where I am now. An issue for me changed my direction. I painted a large oil, seascape many years ago, almost entirely with a "knife" and delivered it, hung it, and was advised nearly a year later that it was still "drying" SMILES. There is no real right or wrong answer though. It's a matter of preference and personal choice. The more valid issue is to create, express, and enjoy whatever medium one explores, experiments with, and perhaps settles into. Truly it's all about the Passion. Steven Wolf Life long artist
