Does anyone know how to remove the burnt smell that popcorn leaves in the microwave.
My lovely son decided he'd put a packet in the zapper a few weeks ago, he really burnt it and now I cant seem to get rid of the smell.
I have tried boiling water with lemon juice in the microwave, but it just cant get rid of the smell.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You can try baking soda, add a bit of water and turn it on for a minute or two, see if that helps. Or put the powder in there dry when not in use it can help the smell.
By the way i think that is an aweful smell, My brother has done that a few times.

Burnt popcorn has to be by far the worst smell that can linger.
I have to be honest, I blew up my best friends microwave one night cooking microwave, I didnt realise her zapper had a high wattage, the microwave actually caught on fire. Her kitchen stunk.I felt so bad, not only did she get a new microwave, but I paid for a proffesional cleaner to clean her kitchen from top to bottom, then I repainted it to make sure all the small was gone.
I've just put a dish in with the baking soda to try. Cross your fingers that it works.

OH GOODNESS! Big oopse!
I think my mom ended up tossing a microwave that my brother burnt popcorn in because she couldent get rid of the smell. I wouldent blame her. Its the reason i only cook popcorn on the stove top lol.
I hope it works for you!

One of the first things I tried was washing the inside of the microwave with a baking soda paste. That one failed.
Then I put baking soda in water, boiled it left it to sweat in the microwave, wipped then wipped it down. That one failed too.
I dont want to throw this microwave out, its only a couple of months old.

You could try going to the grocery store and getting either whole Cinnamon sticks or cinnamon extract and putting it in a dish of wash and boiling it out. You can leave the dish in the microwave until it evaporates. Bleach out the whole microwave first and then try this. It should get into the vents and clear out the smell.

YAH We have finally found a winner.
I used your suggestion but changed it a little.
***********************************************************
I put about two cups of water in a microwave bowl, and a couple tablespoons of powdered cinnamon and boiled the solution for about 20 minutes. Then left the bowl in the microwave for about 24 hours.
When I took the bowl out, the microwave stunk like burnt cinnamon, and I honestly thought it made it smell worse. I wipped the microwave down with a warm cloth with nothing but plane water on it. Left the door open for another 24 hours.
And now there is no trace of any smell what so-ever, its absolutely smell free.

Ive used the microwave twice to double check now nasties are hidden until its reused and still no smell..
THANKYOU so much for your help....

Uggh! What a terrible thing. You can try wiping the microwave with vanilla essence (I used this method and it worked for me). OR Putting half a lemon in a bowl of water and berining to the boil in there and simer for 5 or 10 minutes. Or if all else fails - Nilodor (supermarket shelf in Australia) works on pretty much everything! You can get a spray one now too. Good luck! Let us know what eventually works.

I never thought of using Nilodor.
Idemailed nearly a dozen different companies asking their advise and thought Id wait a day to see if I got any repolies, of course none, but I found that cinnamon powder and water boiled for about 20 minutes then left to sit for 24 hours did the trick.
Ive always used lemon in water once a week to make sure the steam helps to disinfect the microwave, but this time nothing seemed to work. Im so glad I finally found something, and Im hoping this discussion can give someone else an idea on what solutions they can use for any smelly problem they have.
Thanks

Put 2 cups of water and 1/3 cup of vinegar into a bowl. Use some of this mixture to wipe down the inside walls of the microwave. Then place the bowl into the microwave and bring to a boil.

Im determined to find a way to chase the smell away. It really does smell.
I'll keep at it until we find a winner, the microwave isnt going anywhere and I have time to keep experimenting with it.

tried the lemon in water, candle scent in water, vanilla, and all sorts of fruits, spices, vinegars, etc., in water. No lessening of burnt smell in mircrowave. I tried the ground coffee (three times) treatment and the microwave smelled like an electric percolator that had boiled dry for several hours. Tried 409, Simple Green, Windex, spray-on air fresheners (odor removers) and they work for the moment, until the microwave is used again. Tried to disassemble the unit's casing to clean inside, but it (Kenmore) has Allen screws with nubbin sticking out so needs a special wrench not available at the hardware stores. Sears wants $100 bench fee just for a lookee-see, and a scheduler said it coulc cost another $100 to clean the oven (it works fine, just reeks like a burned down house). All this because an egg roll burned when set for 2 1/2 minutes which was okay if it had been frozen but it was thawed and burned, letting out clouds of black smoke before I finished changing the baby. All I know is to avoid heating water (comes out tasting burnt) in it and keep cleaning the interior before and after every use, and hope that with time the stink will ease off.

I've used boiled water and vinegar before to help remove smells from my last microwave, unfortunately it didnt work either.
There has to be something simple that can be used to get rid of the smell.
Maybe if I cooked some charcoal mmm
