Have you ever met any of your favorite writers?

I live in Austin TX & there are a bunch of locals that are writing science fiction (I call them the local-yocals.) But I have also gone to other cities for science fiction conventions and meet some of my absolute fav writers. In 1983 I got to meet Anne McCaffrey. In the 1990's I was introduced to the writings of, and then met Mercedes Lackey. A few yrs ago I read some books by Robert J. Sawyer and then discovered he was coming to a con in Houston. So, have you ever met any writers you liked and how did it come about?

I havent met my favorite author yet, Anne McCaffrey yet, but I am hoping to at Dragon Con this year in Georgia, I went last year and met her son Todd. I think Elizabeth Anne Scabarouh is going to be there and Jody Lynn Nye. I am not sure if I can imagine how I am going to react, its amost to good to be true. I also like some of James Pattersons stuff, mostly his young adult. Piers Anthony is funny.

I got to meet Anne back in 1983. I heard she doesn't go to con's much these days for health reasons. I had a friend who got to meet Andre Norton before she passed away. Seems to me I've meet Elizabeth Scarborough, I know I've meet Elizbeth Moon - she's a semi-local - used to live in Florence Texas but I hear she's moved to Dallas or Ft Worth.

I got to meet Esme Raji Codell, who wrote Educating Esme. She came to my campus one day to talk about teaching. I found out at the last minute and stayed late just so I could hear her talk. She was funny and I bought a book for her to sign.

I've never heard of her, but then I'm rather out of touch with the "kiddie lit" croud. Thanks for introducing me to her - Diary of a Fairy Godmother sounds like my cuppa!

Some years ago I listened to a speech of William Golding, the guy who wrote The Lord of the Flies. He was visiting a university in northern Sweden. I remember that he had great humor - it is about the only famous author I can remember meeting.

How I hated that book - probably because I didn't much care for teenaged boys and it rang so true! Not that I don't like guys, you understand, but teenage boys (and men that ACT like teenaged boys) just annoy me!

Ursula K LeGuinn visited my school when I was in 7th grade and I got to meet her. It was a great experience. She answered all of our questions and gave us insight into being a writer.

Anne McCaffrey lives in Ireland now - I know, its a big enough country and probably doesn't have science fiction conventions. I have an Ireland story. I had a friend who worked for an advertizing company. One of her clients was a travel tour group that organizes these "shopping tours" to Ireland. Turned out it wasn't for 1 ticket but 2. After listening to her go thru her list of friends about who had passports and who could take off on 1 days notice (the lists didn't match) I suggested my mother. So, my mom got to go to Ireland with my friend for, basically the cost of the meals (about $350.)

Being that I am a writer, I have not ever met anyone of real big fame. Locals of course, put that is about the size of it. One day I hope to travel in their circles.
