i am planning to go to HongKong this summer, there are travel packages available here in my place but it costs more than if i will just go there and visit. the only problem is that i am not familiar with the place yet and i might not enjoy it if i wouldt get a travel agent.
what do you think?

Travel agents are a good resource and they sometimes have good tour deals that are not often offered online. With a travel agent, they do the research for you but keep in mind that most of them work on commission and have their best interest in mind. Don't get me wrong, I've used them in the past and think that they are absolutely necessary in some cases but now that I have an intimate knowledge of online travel, I do my research and bookings online as I usually can get the best deals online. Also, if you book online, most of the credible, large travel websites have a low price guarantee.

HI there, are you with someone? or you just want to travel alone? you wont lost in HK, taxis are everywhere. If you knew a hotel which is cheaper in HK then go without the help of agency but if its your first time, it is still better if u are under the travel packages.

Travel agents get their commissions from the suppliers, not you the client. Sometimes big online sites are cheaper because they have more negotiating power, sometimes it just looks like they are cheaper until you start adding in all their fees.
If you were just doing something simple or maybe to a place you already knew, or if you like the adventure of going out on your own, then you could easily take care of the arrangements yourself. With an agent you will get personal service and knowledge, and an advocate in case something should go wrong like cancelled flights.
In your case I would take the package deal because you will get so much more out of it than going it alone. There is more to the value of a trip than the price.
