depends if your children get carsick or not. I would leave dolls and hair brushes and some dolls clothes in the car, colouring book with crayons not coloured pensils as you do not want pencil shavings in the car, on long trips my parents and my brother and sisters used to play i spy its a game where you think of things and the other people have to try and guess but you pick something like trees or street signs and easy things like that not just something you saw on the side of the road that you cant see anymore, maybe id leave like leggo's so they can build things if they are interested in those things. That is all i can think of oh and one or two toys they can pick out themselfs. Hope it helps and i have not repeated anyhting anyone else has said. I had a uick scan of the responses and i saw colouring in books a few times. Sorry for repeating that.

i forgot and some music that they enjoy so they can sing along and if it gets too much to handle tell them to colur in for a while. But i would only put lots of stuff in the car if i was going on a long trip like 30 mins drive or something, not to the shops or anything like that as it would be a waste of time to me..

We also have a portable DVD player, which is a Godsend for really long trips! Coloring books with crayons, matchbox cars, speak n spells and the like work well. We have one of those Leap Pads for my son, which is good for him to learn things while he plays. And he's got a little baby-laptop as well. Anything that will engage him and keep him busy so he doesn't realize how long we've been in the car will work.

For those long trips, bring a long plenty of movies. Also my youngest loves to draw, so she takes along her purse that she keeps her pencils and paper in. No markers unless you want a mess on your hands. Handheld games, anything that will keep them from getting bored and a lot of it for those long trips. Both my girls loves those little pet shop electronic toys. They can take care and play with there pet. It keeps them from fighting, so that makes for a very quiet ride. Also those portable dvd players are a godsend. They both have one so there's no fighting over who wants to watch what, with there own headphones. Makes me want to get out of the passenger seat and climb back there, lol. Just let them decide what they want to bring along. Just don't let them bring there entire movie library, lol. Maybe 5 movies that they all like, and leave it at that.

My child is now 16 and we still do pretty much the same thing for her now as we did then. She thourghly enjoys her music so we allow her to take her CD player and because she has so many CD's we give her a limit on how many she can take. A couple years ago we purchased for her a Gameboy Sp and over the years she has accumalated many different games that get her frustrated but occupied. We own a high top conversion van and she pretty much stays all the way in the back seat, keeping to herself. With all the things she owns she keeps the above things with her at all times as well as a pen and paper because she loves to write and has even published some of it on poetry.com and her school magazine.

I have a backpack in the car with a few toys that the kids got to pick out. My daughter's purse stays in the car at all times because if she happens to forget it, she freaks out. LOL

I guess it depends on how old your child is. I used to bring little electonic toys such as a leapster pad (sorry if my spelling is off),an abc and numbers game and books for them to look at or read are some ideas. My daughter always brought crayons/colored pencils and a drawing pad.
