Treasure Hunting with a Metal Detector

I have been watching some shows on TV about Treasure Hunting and one was about people hunting for treasure with a Metal Detector. I thought this might be a fun hobby. Maybe one that I could share with my 12 year old grandson. But I don't even know how to begin to look for the right type for me. Do they make a good one that is not to technical or heavy for the novice hunter? Seems that I have heard in the past that some metal detectors are just a waste of money. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
