I am not rich so I can't afford a vintage Les Paul or a American Strat. So I buy the best I can for my level of play. Everytime a musician friend comes over to pick around they always start naming off pickups and electronic components to upgrade my guitar, does it really matter? I am not in a band and I just enjoy picking around. Sometimes I sit in for this or that, but mainly just an novice. I am tired of upgrading and trying to buy my way to a good sounding guitar. Can I upgrade my stellar and please the know it alls?

Forget the know it alls. If you're not looking for a specific sound out of your guitar (pickups are a large component of the electric guitar sound), don't worry about it. Different pickups won't make you a better player. They give you an opportunity to change your tone. Enjoy playing instead of worrying about this. When you're ready to try something different, you'll know.

Hun, if you are happy with what you have then don't worry about upgrades on the pickups just yet. It's different if you are a professional musician or in a band and gigging, then upgrading and higher quality guitars makes a difference.
