Angry Tourists Break Mugger's Neck

United States
February 25, 2007 7:28pm CST
A group of U.S. tourists, including a former Marine, killed a Costa Rican mugger by breaking his neck after he pulled a gun on them in a Caribbean port, a local police official said on Thursday. The cruise ship passengers told police they jumped on Wagner Segura, 20, to defend themselves when he pointed a .38 caliber revolver at them near the Caribbean port of Limon on Wednesday, and somehow snapped his neck, regional police director Luis Hernandez said. Segura died instantly and two other unidentified thieve, one of whom was armed with a knife, fled the scene, Hernandez said. Do you feel sorry for Mr. Segura or do you think he got what he deserved? It must have been very frightening to be accosted like that in a foreign country. Lloyd

Caught in the act, punished on the spot, no long drawn out court case, not alot of money spent on lawyers etc. It ended well since it had to occur at all. We go through out lives making choices and since he chose to perpetuate a crime he deserves that ending. We must be prepared to stand on the side of right. To defend our own when in a similar position. The crooks may think twice when they realize we are not going to take this stuff anymore. We can be sheep or warriors on the side of right!

Let us hope more of out boys come home and are ready when they are out and about. We must do something about crime and don't think that it can happen overnight. Thanks so much for responding to me.

There are a lot of people who agree with you 100%. I hope that other would be criminals will remember this case before they try to commit any crime. They might just run into a pi$$ed off ex-marine. Lloyd

It's shocking, but he did get what he deserved. I feel sorry for his family, but I don't feel sorry for him.

I would not go so far as to say that he deserved to die, but I do not have any pity for him either. Violent robbery is an unforgivable crime, and I cannot believe that this would have been the first time that he had been involved in this sort of thing. I have more pity for his previous victims, many of whom would be rather pleased if they had read the article.

I thinking the same way as you are. I'm pretty sure this wasn't his first victim. Hopefully this will send a message to future robbers. Lloyd

Agreed that a human life was lost....but one must also consider the fact that a person protecting oneself or reacting to a threat will be proportional to the threat perception.....a threat to life may cause the agressor to face the same amount of reversed threat....the courts must allow for this....mostly people talk about rights (for the criminal)...what about the fact that the criminal intent was "physical harm". whose side is the law on?

In this particular case, the law is on the side of the tourists. I applaude the Costa Rican authorities for settling this case quickly and with common sense. Lloyd

If this is the same event I read about, the man that killed the mugger did so by putting him in a headlock, and btw, the mugging victim was like 70 years old!

You are correct. He was a elderly ex-Marine. No charges were filed against him. The robber thought he was preying on a defenceless senior citizen. He was sadly mistaken. Lloyd

Part of me wants to say yes and another part wants to say poor man. All in all the wrong doers will get what's coming to them.

It sure sounds like he got what was coming to him. He shouldn't have been out there robbing anyone. These tourist play a big role in the Costa Rican economy. Should have been more grateful. Lloyd

Sometimes judgement comes swiftly to those who offend. If Wagner Segura had not threatened the lives of others this would not have happened.

I think the guy got what he deserved maybe if this happened more often this crap would quit, but sad to say it is just going to get worse....If one sets themselve up to harm others he should not be left free to do so or to do it to others....more people need to stand up for themselves such as this case instead of cowarding back in a corner we may get our fun back in this world with being able to explore other areas as tourist...as you noticed the tourist business is slowing rapidly cause of this it is being seen all over more people are staying close to home and under great protective areas, this is very sad for there is alot out there to see, it just isn't safe enough to go and do so.

You are so right. It would be nice to know that you could visit any country without worrying about being robbed. There are so many places to that aren't safe to visit and it's ashame. Lloyd

Your opinion seems to be in the majority here at MyLot. I wonder what he would say if he could read what people are saying about him. Lloyd

If that sort of thing happened in the UK he would probaly been arrested and charged with using undue force,we favour the criminals over here and arrest the victim.

Well the authorities in Costa Rico didn't favor the robber. They let the Marine go on with his cruise and filed no charges. Lloyd
