unfortunately this is not that easy to do because this is almost a trial and error step. you will have to get to higher frequencies but at the same time you would also try to run some diagnostics to verify the stability of the system. you can't just shoot for the highest frequencies if your computer would always crash. you don't want that right? so thats where the "stress testing" comes in. like letting your computer run a diagnostic program for atleast an hour and if the computer passes that then you can again procede to notch up the speed and again stress test until you can achieve the 'maximum speed your computer can attain without crashing'
for those who are interested just post your processor and motherboard and we'll help each other out

for starters overclocking is to run the processor (CPU) faster than the speed it has been tested and approved. Its a technique or procedure to get more performance from your current system. its like forcing your CPU to run faster than what it was intended for. there are of course limitations and risks from these. such as overheating and also if you're motherboard will allow you to overclock. as an example my processor AMD Athlon 64 +3000 runs at 1.8Ghz(actual speed) and i pushed it to run at 2.4Ghz thru changes in the BIOS or system setup settings.
Since my computer is just assembled then theres no problem changing the settings but if you have a built system like dell chances are you won't be able to overclock (worked with dell before).
Before you get started you'll have to know your compouter first. like the model/brand and also if you ccan access such settings in the BIOS or thru jumpers in the motherboard

I've never tried over clocking but I'm familiar with it. I didn't overclock my computer because I feel that there is no need to. I also replace my computer every year to cope up with the latest technologies.
