Hi, if you want to be a machine designer. I can give you some suggestions. But I know little about your majoy.

I can't comment myself as a good Graphics designer, but I am an averager Graphic Designer and trying to be more and more better. Actually my father is a Travel Agent so I keep helping him a lot in graphic designing tasks like logos, website and banners e.t.c I use Macromedia Flash for this purpose. You asked "how can I be a good designer?", My suggestion is you should keep practising more and more, bring new Ideas and concepts to your illustrations do not copy the old ones and last but not the least you should have a mind of artists I mean you should know how to play with colours....LoL
