Should animals be used for medical research?

This is a highly debated subject that people have strong feelings for either way they look at it. I understand that without research such as this, we may not have certain products available to us yet. Allowing testing on animals reduces risks to human life, but are we making them suffer? At what point do we draw the line with animal testing? Should we do away with it completely, but very strict rules in place to make sure no animals get hurt, or have free access to testing on animals?
