Homeschooling for Kids

I'm seriously considering homeschooling my kids in the future. My eldest is a year old and I am soon giving birth to our 2nd child in 3 months time. I am confident that I will do a good job, afterall, I am a teacher and have handled students of all ages from pre-school to college. There are support groups for homeschooling parents in our area which organize seminars and exposure trips to help homeschooled kids and their parents with the socialization aspect of development. I've read a lot about homeschooling, and I'm well-aware of possible pros and cons. Has anybody here tried/experienced homeschooling? Care to share your insights re benefits and bumps I might encounter along the way?

i haven't read much about home schooling, but i think it's one of those things that a mother should consider when deciding on their kid's education. it has a lot of advantages, like not much pressure at home, the kid will be monitored thoroughly, he can freely express his ideas to his teachers and not be shy of his schoolmates. also, there'll be no schoolmates to be afraid of, children to fight with, kids to bully. but of course, the disadvantage would always be the socialization and experience of the real school scenerio, having friends to share your learning with. the list goes on, but if you ask me, i guess i would still settle for the traditional school. good luck in choosing.

I agree with the positive points that yanple pointed out. As for the socialization... That's a big myth. You don't have time to socialize at school anymore either. There are a lot of opportunities for homeschool children to socialize. I'm a homeschooling mom of a 5yo dd with autism... She wouldn't be doing so great if she was in a school environment as they'd either put her in special ed or she'd always be in trouble for the behaviors she displays whenever she gets overloaded. At home she's doing wonderful, has an activity with other children all but 2 days of the week and is almost doing 2nd grade work. This is because I can control certain things to make sure that she's not overloaded and that she can learn and do well at it. homeschooling is convinient afor the child and he will be more focused on his studies because someone is there for him but i think the lack the art of socializing to other kids.it would be better if he could interact with fellow students so that he can learn more form others.

Fortunately socialization isn't an issue for us. We have lots of ways to socialize which is great. Brenda Marie Homeschool 4 Us (My homeschool blog): http://homeschool4us.blogspot.com/ My ebook: "Homeschooling Without The Headaches" http://stores.lulu.com/store.php?fAcctID=812683

We are currently homeschooling our son through an online program. He is excelling, for the first time since 5th grade he has A's and B's instead of D's and F's. If I had known about homeschooling we would have done it years ago.

I think homeschooling is a great idea, especially in your case, since you're a qualified educator. I would think that you, as the mother, would better assess your child's needs and pacing than any teacher. Also, you handle your kid one on one, unlike the school system wherein one teacher is to ?? students. For myself, however, I am not confident with doing homeschooling, so I guess I'll just enter my kid in a traditional school when the time comes and just try to guide him.

A lot of people are worried that their kids won't do well in homeschooling. You're not alone. All I can say is that if you want to do it, then go for it. Surely you'll be a better teacher than any other person because of the one on one attention and your knowledge as a mom. My husband and I homeschool our girls who are 6 1/2 and 3. We wouldn't have it any other way. As far as bumps, the only ones I could think of is the laws in your area. In the US, each state has it's own laws.

Fortunately most of the states' laws aren't that bad. Brenda Marie Homeschool 4 Us (My homeschool blog): http://homeschool4us.blogspot.com/ My ebook: "Homeschooling Without The Headaches" http://stores.lulu.com/store.php?fAcctID=812683
