According to me PHP is best for many reasons..... Mainly, PHP servers are low cost servers and so, hosting a PHP site is cheap and another reason being that PHP is very easy; for that matter ASP.net is also easy, i find PHP to be a bit more easier. There are many webhosting companies providing free hosting for PHP, but you won't get so many for ASP.net as free.

all that matters is what u r rite now in web developing.....beginner or mediocre......... if u r a beginner, u can go for ASP.NET as it provides a good foundation 4 understanding the objects associated.....but hosting is costly....n Visual Studio.NET is also not cheap........
PHP is good in its own way.....but u gotta refer to web reference more than juzz a software 4 gettin help......... hosting is cheap..........
so it all depends on wat u can do........

Ok i love PHP i'm impartial.
If you want to go for Microsoft product (Windows, IIS MSSQL, ...) go for ASP/ASP.NET. Microsft hosting cost more than a linux hosting and in my point of view are less reliable. Everything is propritary and need $$ software.
If you want to go for Linux (Linux, Apache, MySQL, ...) go for PHP, cheaper hosting, very reliable, everything is free and open-source you will have a big communauty being you to help if you need help.
