I would like to get a small "lap" dog for our family. Now, I have three young children. The type of dog that I would like to find is: calm natured, easily trained, good with kids, etc.
What are your suggestions?

I wasn't aware that there were any calm lap dogs. I thought all small dogs have a nervous tempermant when regarding noisy children. I would think that maybe a smaller dog (not a lap dog though) could be alright, like a beagle, or basset hound....

Well, I guess we just want a small type of dog that is generally calm. Also one that preferably doesn't shed too much as we will probably keep him/her inside. We have had a poodle before but she was much older when we got her-she was my husbands grandfather's and when passed away we inherited her. I am not sure if poodles are calm as puppies, though and that is what we are worried about.
