In America, I think that racism was born from greed and depravity and has been fed through the ages by fear. So called "conquerors" and "settlers" with the attitude of "I want everything that you have and I am depraved enough to kill and oppress you in order to have it."
Racism lives on today because we feed that depravity with fear and ignorance, insecurity and apathy. Yes, it is most worrying that many of us who do not realize that we are racist, actually are. My husband is white and I am black. I tell him that he runs a low-grade fever of racism because he believes in stereotypes that he doesn't even realize are stereotypes. The only "cure" to racism that I can think of would be love and compassion. If you truly develop a sense of compassion for what it takes to be a human being of any sort, the idea of racism would be repulsive to you.

Racism is born out of ignorance and fear. People fear the unknown so they immediately become defensive, and prepare to deal with it as if they were going into combat against it. Racism shouldn't exist, but it does. Racism is a result of a fear of the unknown.
"That black guy over there doesn't look like my white family, so I should be afraid of him, or he must be bad," is an example of a rationalization made by a racist.
