Is speeding wrong?

Singapore
February 26, 2007 3:26pm CST
Just an hour back, I left my house to run some errands. It was in the middle of the night at around 4am. It's dark and late but I am not going to tell a ghost story. :P I was returning and suddenly I heard a loud sound in the dead of the night. When I tried to find out what was going on, it turned out that a car, a sleek black sports car, just zoomed past me. I am 100% positive that he exceeded the speed limit on that road. Do you think speeding is wrong? Even if there is supposedly no one on the road, and it is late at night? If you were that driver, would you speed? Yes, no, why? Do share your thoughts on this.

Yes i do think that its wrong to be speeding even at that hour. My partner leaves to go to work at that hour of the morning. Even if it isnt busy at all there are still the odd one or two cars that are driving to get home or to work. If i was that driver i would slow down as it is very dark at that hour of the morning and if there were other drivers like him on the road you wouldnt know that there was a car there untill the last minute thats why i like blue or yellow cars not yellow but you get what im saying cars tht you can see at any time of the night or day.

Well don't these people have their headlights on? I think you could see them if they did no matter what color their car is. If the car was speeding and headlightless then he is probably drunk. That is wrong. Drunk driving is bad.

I agree. And pray be very careful when you drive, especially at night.

The driver may have the headlights of his car on.. but isn't that besides the point? What if someone suddenly appears and dash across the road? What if some car with the headlights on appear and neither can stop in time?

Speeding is almost always wrong. One, it is breaking the law. Two, your vision is not as clear, and almost anything can get in front of your car at any hour, and you will hit it for sure if speeding. One has no control over a car at high speeds if a tire blows, or a hole in the road. So, it is safer, no mater alone or what hour, to drive the speed limit in my opinion.

That's what I thought too - it is so reckless to speed. What if you hit someone? No matter how "good" you think you are, how fast you think you might be in braking if someone suddenly appears, there is always a maybe, a maybe that may likely change many lives for the worse.

I have to kind of agree with both of you there, but at the same time, I'm guilty of it myself lol. It is a bit reckless to speed, but in some cases (and in moderation) it's not too bad. If you're in a neighborhood with a bunch of kids or an area where pedestriens are likely to be (especially a parking lot) then it's definitely a serious hazard, but in the middle of the night on an empty road in on a highway or something like that, I don't think it's as bad. Also, like someone else said, 5-10 isn't that bad anyway, even in the middle of the day, as long as there are no police around and you're not in a school or construction zone. 20-30, that's definitely pushing it, but again, I've been guilty of that before too (but not often and usually when the road is empty in the middle of the night or something like that). lol

according to me there should not be any speed limit as most of the person arond the world dint obey traffic rules concerned to speed limits.every person should be properly educated about traffic rules and then still if they dint obey trafficrules put them behind bars.every person should take responsibily to ensure that no accident will took place.i think its ok if somebody break speed limit when there is noone on roads.

I beg to differ on this. I do feel that there should be speed limits - just like how there should be laws in place even though not everyone will follow them. It's something like an deterrent... imagine if EVERY driver starts to speed as if they own the road... goodness, the home will be the only safe place left! :P

Home still might not be all that safe if you're not very far away from the road, lol.

Yes, speeding is wrong. If you have an emergency, call an emergency vehicle. OK, that said, I have a lead foot. I habitually drive over the posted speed limit. Don't know why for sure, I just always do.

Yup, another valid point there - where applicable, "if you have an emergency, call an emergency vehicle." ;-)

Nope, never mate lol. I take risks but not stupid ones like that. I think there are just too many reckless drivers on the road today man it is unbelievable. I think there should be stricter penalties for speeding.

I think excessive speeding is wrong, but 5-10 miles over the limit is not so bad. I drive atleast five over when I am in a hurry. I have never been in a wreck and I have never hit anything or ran any stop signs or lights. I have never been ticketed either. There some roads where it just feels natural to go faster than the posted speed limit, but I am from a small town and there isn't much to hit on most of the roads.

Yes it is as you can never be 100% sure that no one will be on the road at any time. We have some car speeding up and down here every night with a loud exhaust which gets very annoying. Sometimes he is out there at 12am and wakes People up. It is wrong to speed through the Roads like that. This is only a little Village and the Road outside my Flat is very narrow and I am just waiting for something to happen.

Speeding is wrong..period. It doesn't matter when you are driving, by night or day, rules are meant to be followed and not broken. Many people feel tempted to over speed when they see an empty road, they don't realize anything can happen in the blink of an eye, they are not only putting themselves in danger but risking others lives' too. I wouldn't speed no matter what and speeding is definitely wrong.

I will be 100% honest-- I have a very hard time driving the speed limit! It isn't always that I'm late-- but I just get in and go.. I don't drive much over the limit- but its still speeding- To answer your question- I think speeding at night and passing people is WRONG.. sounds like the guys was going pretty fast. This is dangerous- Can't see as well at night-- and you never know what's out on the streets. So yes speeding is bad in a way. I do speed though- just not excessive! Mostly I'll go 70 in a 65 (highway) I try to stick to the 30's through town!

Speeding is completely wrong, unfortunately there are always those people who will speed, not just in the quiet of the night but in heavy traffic during the day too. I have to admit there has been one occasion that I have exceeded the speed limit, on a motorway, in the middle of the night, but in mitigation, I was trying to get to the hospital in a real hurry after my father had a massive heart attack. I don't know what scared me more, the thought of losing my ded or the fact that I was actually driving at 100 mph. I would never do anything like that again, it is far too dangerous not just to myself but to other people on the road.

The problem with speeding is that you are not fully in control. If anything happened you would not be able to stop. Also you can get in trouble for speeding which is not nice. My sons girlfriends dad has just been banned for speeding and is missing driving so much. Maybe it will have taught him a lesson not to speed.

Yes, I think you brought up a very valid point - about not being in control. One thought came up when you brought up this point - that the driver may have been speeding precisely because he wants to feel in control. It's ironic when you think about it - he wanting to feel in control is actually out of control.

Yes, Speeding is wrong.. unless.. You are in driver's ed and just learning, and then when you realise your speeding, try to slow down only to discover the pedal is so small you can not feel it, and land a lead foot to make 60 foot tire mark skids hr hr hr .. Oh okay.. That is what I did in drivers ed.. Naughty me.. Needless to say I am not interested in driving a car with a tiny inch by 2 inche pedal that is 1/4 and inch from the floor... :) .. Speeding, I can not stand speeders.. and if someone speeds by me.. I say.. Go Get em Papa Ogun! hehehehe The G-d of Iron does Justice.. and does not like his toys abused.. So he'll deal with the speeders in the way he sees fit. Althought Papa Ogun knows when I say this I am joking to refrain from swearing at them :D . - DNatureofDTrain

Interesting - most here agree speeding is wrong. Here in Sacramento California just about every one goes over the speed limit, and they get mad at the people who do obey the law for being in their way. If they do that now with posted speed limit signs, I would hate to see what it would be like without their enforcement. I don't drive a car, so the only speeding I do is in crowded malls.
