If you want to get a good sleep, avoid stimulants such as caffeine like coffee, tea and soda at night so you can control your insomia because if you drink coffee or other caffeine it will make you awake for the whole night.
And dont stress yourself too much because stress causes insomia. So you can sleep well, avoid doing things/activities that to strenous before you sleep. And also avoid eating alot before going to sleep. Make your room condusive to sleep, and dont do your work on your bed and if you have a tv in your room better remove because all this factors that i have said could contribute to insomia. And last one if you are stress, do some exercise, so it can eliminate stress. Well i hope this helps you.

oooh no tv in the room? Then i guess that must be the problem, but its my husbands habit to watch the tv before he is tired enough to doze off... and by the time he is tired enough to sleep it will be 6am in the morning.... i guess i should ban him from watchin tv after 12am

I think stretching exercises are best if you're trying to get some sleep. Doing intense workouts just around bed time will only awaken you more, instead of shutting down for the night. A glass of warm milk is said to do wonders. Praying, too, for a peaceful and restful night could help. Night, night. Don't let the bed bugs bite.

er......It depends on ones age.But you do not look old,as older people have trouble sleeping. Two or three hours, daily,is a blessing,if they are lucky.
Coming to the serious part of the discussion,it has been known, for a long time that counting sheep,in bed, is good at overcoming the same. Many people have innovated and come out with their own, unique solutions.Ah,but you are asking "Why" and not for solutions.
The reasons are many:-
1.One might have slept in day time,as I do,spending my time browsing the net during night, trying to make some bucks,as in myLot and other sites!
2.Anxiety.This is one of the most important reasons.Over the years I have found that, anxiety,is not necessary,in fact is a disease.Instead,if one has problems(these two go hand in hand!),one should try to solve them, instead of being tied down by anxiety.Overcoming problems, makes one more and more self-confident,and the sleep problems generally disappear.
3.Neighbourhood disturbances,as during celebrations and festivals. One could get away fromthe scene, for a short while,to get the much needed sleep!
4.All of us have good friends and, most of the times, are forced to be bad charcters, who raise our hackles(can be found in debating forums etc),in our offices etc.The latter contribute to our lack of sleep, not only during night, but during daytime too.Try to to be in a place where there are lesser chances of encounters with these!Better have a tension free and undemnding COMPANY.One should be lucky to have good friendsand their support,as this is one of the most important reqirements for a person to be,at least, not a failure.Having good FRIENDS,is a must!
5.All of us,commit mistakes,and sometimes become,objects of ridicule(in society,among friends,colleaugues etc).This is a serious situation,depriving us of the badly needed sleep.Try to move to a new location,for some time at least,if not permanently.This will give a badly needed breather!
6.Don't antagonise people.People skill is needed,in any situation,to anybody.Modern life has become complicated, and an organized gang can give hell, for anybody.Hence better, not to be lonely, and have powerful friends.
One can go on and on ......STRESS has been part of Human and Animal life, from the time of Neandethals and before.A cheerful disposition, enjoying the present to the full and accepting certain facts of life, without trying to CHANGE THE WORLD,are part of the knack of getting a good noght's sleep!
