When you have to buy a gift for someone, do you think about the preferance of that particular person to whom you are going to give that. Or you just buy something nice without thinking of it's use?
I alwasy think about the person when I am going to buy a gift, like waht kind of taste he/she has, waht kind of thing is usuful for him/her. Otherwise if yo are giving a very nice thing as a gift also may not make much sense.
What is your opinion about it?
How do you come up with gift ideas?

Sometimes it's very hard to come up with a good idea for a gift, budget can be also a big issue as you always want to present something valuable and nice, with some people it's easy to know what they like and what will make them happy, with others it may be hard to know if the gift is useful for them or not, although it's a symbolic gesture but it should not be away from a person's likes, nothing worse than a gift you just want to through away and too embarrassed to do so .. buying gifts is always a hard task for me and often I ask helps from others to make a good choice.

Right money is also a criteria with choosing the gift.

I always spend a lot of time considering what type of gift I should choose for somebody. If I know the person really well, then I would most likely know what would be most suitable. If it is an anniversary or birthday, then I would buy something personal, like perfume or clothes. For Christmas, I would usually buy some useful item that can be used in the home.

It gets easy to pick something as a gift if you know the person well for whom you are buying the gift.

I definitely think about what the person likes. I shop all year round online and off and when I travel. Anyone who lives in California or plans to visit, go to Solvang if you love to shop. Solvang is a small danish village packed full of unique shops of all kinds. Cambria is a good place as well, great shops, restaurants and a beautiful coastline.
My best friend and I went to Solvang one year and we saw things we loved and decided to just tell each other what we loved and let the other buy it. It was easier then running all over and then trying to come back and meet each other. This is the first time we did this, since we were only there for a day. You might think, that's no fun. But guess what, you get gifts you really love. You save each other's gifts until Christmas or a birthday. Believe it or not you forget a lot of the stuff you picked out by the time you get it. We have continued this tradition and my mom and I do it now as well, since we have somewhat different tastes. We do also pick out some surprise gifts on our own.
If a person has a hobby or collection it makes it easier. For instance, my dad collects pocket knives and loves to read, likes Aqua Velva and Poppcock Candy. He lives in Illinois, so it's nice to be able to send small items. My stepmom loves snowmen, seasonal items and Jovan Musk, and so do I. We have the same taste so she's easy to buy for. My best friend collects Coca-Cola items and loves to golf. Another best friend loves hummingbirds and another loves anything pink and purses.
I will search the net, including Ebay, looking for pocket knives, Coca-Cola items and hummingbird items. I found so many cool sites for hummingbird items. I even look for cards with a hummingbird on it and sometimes wrapping paper that matches a friends hobby. I got golf wrapping paper for my golfer friend and had Coca-Cola wrapping paper once.
If I don't know what the person likes, I ask a friend or their spouse, someone who knows them well. Can you tell, I love to shop for gifts. I love wrapping gifts too.
Lots of times I get items online free due to earning money via Pay Pal by taking online surveys. I have even emailed a few companies for free samples. I let them know how much my friend loves their product and ask if they can help me out with a free sample or coupons. Last year I got 2 coupons for free Aqua Velva and 2 free coupons for Poppycock for my dad. Pretty sweet deals, huh!
As a back up, there's always giftcards.

I put a lot of thought into gifts, as I do not have a lot of money, so why waste it on an unwanted purchase. The other thing is that if I care enough to buy a gift, I care enough to buy a gift that will be pleasing, otherwise, why buy anything at all.

Always have the person you are buying for in mind. It should be an item of value or use to them.
When I shop items will say pick me. so and so will like me!!
Seems silly but that does go on in my head. Really useful for when the person collects something and I can find it for them.

Where is the point in buying a gift for someone if you don't buy something that you know they will enjoy receiving. It's a waste of money if you don't take into consideration the colours they like or the kind of materials or their hobbies etc etc ... I'd rather give money if I wasn't going to bother sourcing something especially for the recpient ..
I bought my sister a beautiful pendant .. it took me 18 months to find the perfect piece .. I had to take into consideration her favourite colours, the fact that she is petite, that her religion would stop her wearing anything too gaudy or large .. and the kind of places she would want to wear a special pendant to ..
I finally choose a truly beautiful Brazilian Kunzite and Diamonds arrangement .. I thought it was stunning the Kunzite was the most delicate of baby pinks but with vibrant hot pinks and purples seeming to shine out from the innermost depths as the faceting caught the light .. I sent it off to her and she loved it .. the 18 months of searching had been well worth it ..

When I buy a gift, I pick something which I know the person will like. Expensive is normally the price I'm willing to go but I've also bought cheaper gifts which mean the same.
I prefer to buy something which suites them.
Kudos,
~Joey
P.s I'm good at buying presents, harder to by for but when I see something I normally go this is it or No I need to search more.

when all my famil lived in town and would spend all our free time together it was very easy to buy gifts. Now that part of my family lives in florida and i dont get to see them very often to send presents now its rather hard as i dont know what my little cousins are into or what they like so anymore presents to family far away are given money or gift certificates. My parents and grandmother are usually thought about gifts of things they would like or enjoy to do.

When I buy a gift I try to mix what I like to give and what I think the person likes. I don't think that we have to buy always something that he/she likes but also give an idea, a suggestion or what we like for him/her.

Yes it all depends on your choice but you have to consider his choice and your pocket.

you better buy something that you both like. This is one way of remembering you when that person uses the thing that you gave. A gift that will not banished and can be of help or something she or he can use.

I do agree with you..I like buying something very apt to the person the present is destined...it is easier if she is a friend of mine...girls have so many desires and we can understand better a woman's mind....it is a bit more difficult where boys are concerned, but I like paying attention to things they like...or sometimes I choose a funny thing...just to make him or her smile with me...of course it is a very hard matter when you have to buy a present for a person you don't know vey well or if you are going to a formal happening...in this case I try to buy something elegant and exclusive, even small!!! but buying a present to a people I love, this is one of the things I love the most..I like all what comes first...i Like the love thought that comes before and behind the present itself..and I like making people little nice surprises!!!
