Yes, it's true. MY dalmation Cross does eat lemons and grapes. Also apples, plums and oranges. He pinches them off our eight fruit trees. The lower third of all our fruit trees, is stripped of fruit.
This habit began when the vet banned him from playing with balls (due to an operation). He decided that if we weren't going to give him balls, he would get his own, starting with the lemons.
He goes to great lenghts to get the higher up lemons. After dropping them at our feet, he then chews them up, often skin as well.
With the grapes, he eats the stems too.

Though your story sounds cute, being a dog lover myself, I should warn you that feeding some fruits are not good to our pets; GRAPES- can cause kidney failure, did you know that even one piece of raisin could kill your pet? ; ORANGES (and other citric fruits)- too much acid is not good for dogs; APPLE- just be sure that you remove the seeds first for seeds are poisonous to them. FYI only

Ohh, thanks for this info. I don't deliberately feed my dogs these fruits. They take them off the trees themselves. There is probably no way I can stop them.
I am not sure if they eat the apple seeds or not?

i had a vet tell me that it's perfectly fine to quarter an orange (with the peel on) and give it to a dog to play with. keeps my friend's blue heeler busy for at least 15 minutes!

That is interesting. I hope it is not hurting him at all. I guess if it doesn't, than that is ok. Well, except that you probably don't want him eating your fruit before you can. He seems like a very creative and cute dalmation. And ingenious, he has found a way to get back at you all, for not giving him any toy balls to play with...amazing.

I don't know if you have America's Funniest vidoes where you live but you should video him doing that and send the video to them ...hey you might win $10,000 ...you never know I sure have never seen a dog eating lemons that he has picked himself ... :D

That has to be cute but probably a pain. I've never heard of a dog go and picks its own fruit. My dog loves fruit and just about anything else that you can give him there are a few things that my dog will NOT eat but i've found that his favorite food is eating apples he loves apples.

We had a dog that would eat corn on the cob, including the cob! This dog was a human garbage disposal. He would eat anything you tossed to him. I am not sure about lemons though. He may have passed on those.

Most dogs seem to enjoy eating fruit, whether it is a few mouthfuls of a piece of fruit that their owner is eating, the skins and cores of such fruit as apples or pears, or many that live near apple, plum or nectarine trees, grapevines or berry canes, seem to almost live on fruit that they pull off the trees themselves.
Fruit is a natural food that dogs in the wild would find and eat so there is nothing wrong with a dog eating fruit, within reason!
Any fruit eaten in excess could upset your dog's stomach and cause diarrhoea, cramps, gas, allergies, or severe gastrointestinal problems - in the same way as it can affect people who eat too much fruit.
For a young, healthy dog, a few "snacks" should be fine as long as your dog still has a normal stool. It can be difficult to stop a dog from over-indulging in windfall fruit that is constantly accessible. Many will enjoy fruit so much that they continue eating it, even though they develop diarrhoea.
If it becomes obvious that your dog is eating far too much fruit, the simple remedy is to keep windfall fruit off the ground or keep your dog away from the fruit trees until his/her stomach returns to normal, then restrict fruit eating to one or two pieces daily.

Funny how competing sites will give different opinions. Tis ok to disagree. Mine came from a page in K9Magazine. So one mans medicine is anothers poison. This is what discussions is all about.

Never had a do go and pick their own but I did have a dog that begged and went nuts for fruit. He was a shih-tzu and he loved to have grapes, banannas, and apples in particular. He wasn't big on the citrus fruit but everything else he was. Never had a dog who did that before or after him. I thought it was a bit strange but it's nice to hear others are like that as well.

I used to give my dog grapes, and the occasional bit of chocolate as well, until I found out that both are poisonous to dogs. There are a number of different fruits that dogs cannot take, because their digestive system is different from humans. There is a comprehensive list of dog poisons at:-

I would suggest that you look at this website before feeding your dog anything but propriety dog-food, even things like potatoes, garlic & onions can cause problems, some dogs lack the enzyme lactase so milk gives them diarrhoea.
Take care of your dog - THINK BEFORE YOU FEED.

I don't deliberately feed my dog fruit. As I wrote a few times here, he takes it off the trees. I can't stand around watching him all day.

That is just too funny! I've never heard of a dog that likes to eat fruit before. It does make one wonder what the appeal is for him to eat the lemons. lol
I know I used to have a cat who would try to eat oranges. Any time I had an orange, she'd sit beside me and beg for a bite. When I'd give her a little piece, she'd take a bite, then proceed to shake her head furiously to get it back out of her mouth again. I could just tell the taste didn't sit well with her at all. I could never figure out why time and time again, she would come back and keep begging for oranges. Well, this was also the cat who would eat flies and crickets. But that's a whole other post! lol

Oh thats so funny. I have a Beagle that loves to get at all our tomatoe plants in the summer. He eats them right from the vines. He seems to prefer the Grape Tomatoes the best. He also eats most anything such as dry pasta at times. He loves veggies of most types also. My wife works at a Middle Eastern Restaraunt & she brings home leg of lamb bones for him. He about knocks her over to get at it. He doesnt like candy too much thank gawd. He licks sugar off cookies & candy then leaves the remains for me to find. Usually I find it by stepping on a gross wet itme. HAHAHA. My beagle is called BUSTER btw. Thanks for a great & funny topic actually. Loved all the response/comments also. Keep posting & have a blast.
