Guppies - Has Anyone Here Ever Seen a Pregnant Guppy?

Hi! I know this sounds stupid LOL but I got a few new guppies a few weeks ago. I know the ones I had before that are male (they are tequila sunrise guppies and you can only get males, they don't sell females). One of the new guppies has a bright yellow tail, so I guess I assumed it was male since males are usually more brightly colored. I noticed yesterday it is staying toward the top. It's midsection seems larger to me and it seems to "waddle" more than swim. The guppies I know are male are the same, thin and swimming around normally. Do you think this could be a female and she is pregnant? Thanks for any help or advice. :-)

I have no idea so I cannot be of any help to you but how exciting if she is. That would be wonderful to have a bunch of little guppies swimming around in there. Cool.

Hi! Oh, I wish it was pregnant, but it's sounding more and more like it's a male and is sick. Bummer! Thanks for replying! :-)

It can be two things. It may be pregnant, and is a female after all. Or, sick and bloated. Sorry. Time will tell. You do separate the babies when they are born, right? Otherwise they will be eaten. Hope your fish is okay.

Hi! Guppies are a species of fish. There are different breeds. For example, I have two that are specially bred, tequila sunrise guppies, so much so that the breeders don't sell the females so they can, I don't know, control it somehow - probably get all the money! LOL (I'd love to get my hands on a female tequila sunrise guppy and breed my own LOL). Guppies are livebearers, meaning that their babies come out from the mother's body ready to swim, just teeny tiny little fish. I really hope this fish is pregnant and not about to die! :-( That would be a bummer. If it is pregnant, it will have some gorgeous babies! :-)

Female guppies don't have the bright coloration. They are just grayish all over. When they get pregnant, you will see a dark blob appear right at the juncture of their belly and their tail. There's no bloating or noticeable change in size when a guppy is pregnant. Very shortly after that, the babies will appear, which are so small and transluscent that they're almost invisible. Most of the time they'll be eaten before you realize they're there. I had to learn the hard way to go ahead and allow guppies to eat their young. If you don't, you will soon have millions of guppies. I couldn't bear to think about that happening so I got rid of all my guppies and let somebody else deal with it.

Hi! Thanks for replying! Bummer, it sounds like this one is just sick, then. Guess I better get my little one gallon set up and move it into isolation so it hopefully won't get the other fish sick. I'm bummed! Thanks, though! :-)

Yeah, I saw a pregnant guppy. When the little gupps came out all my aquarium was full of them, but none of them survived, because they lived together with my turtle in the aquarium and he really liked their taste :) In guppys, like humans, only the female is pregnant, I think.

Hi! Thanks for your reply! It would be really exciting to have babies, if this one is pregnant and not sick, but I'm still waiting to find out. You're right, the females have the babies. I think it's seahorse males that have babies. :-)

guppies are livebearers, meaning that they give to live fry...sometimes when a female guppy looks like it's pregnant it might just be that it's bloated because of the food...the gravid spot does not always indicate that a fish is pregnant but it would sort of stupid if one doesn't at least consider...taking into account that guppies are good breeders and are usually pregnant year round.
