I have read many books of the continuing storyline, but i still feel that the Thrawn trilogy, by Timothy Zahn is the best written.

Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy hands-down. Zahn manages to create very believable characters that finicky fans the world over not only like but accept as being as much 'canon' as Luke or Vader. A writer can't get much better praise than that! The intermeshing of political and social intrigue within his story arcs also better captures the kind of politicking that Lucas seemed to envision for his universe.
And I'll admit it- I'm a sucker for Thrawn. C'mon, he kicked butt without ever once whipping out a lightsaber. How can anyone not like the guy? Or at least respect him.

The Thrawn Trilogy was fantastic. After I read Heir to the Empire off of a friend's reccommendation, I went straight to Borders and picked up the rest of the trilogy. The series was overall well written, and pleasantly spellbinding.

I like the original Thrawn Trilogy, as well. Here, we have a being that is seemingly "all-powerful" "all-knowing," and he does -not- use the Force!
I also have enjoyed his Dualogy, the "Hand of Thrawn," though the coversations between Luke and Mara in the second, book, regarding Luke's being in the Dark Side (Empire's End comics), and Mara's role as the Emperor's Hand, was kinda weak.
Shadow Hunter, a book focusing on Darth Maul, days before The Phantom Menance, was rather interesting.
If you haven't yet, you may like to check out Star Wars: Legacy. It's a comic series, set about 140 years after Endor. The best way I can describe the new Skywalker is a part Han, and a part Anakin. There are 3 main factions, the Jedi, the new Empire, and the Sith.
