The best at present is Intel duo core, its fast and perfect too, if you are going for AMD athlon32 then you need to have a minimu RAM of 1 gb for its peak performence or else it will not perform at its best. athlon32 is also good but it gets heated very easily and if your room is hot then i am sure it will hang up, the other little issue is of noise it makes when it gets heated all its fans are turned on making noise, few people dosent like this at all, the other reason is resale value, if you are selling your computer most of the people want a INTEL processor rather than AMD so it will be ideal to buy INTEL if you think in all directions.

i prefer AMD since i am using one.I use AMD because
--comparatively cheap
--high performance
--high stabilty
--greater support for gaming
i recommned AMD FX 64 bit computing. It has many advantage over intel pentium 4 processors.but i heard that intel pentium duo core2 is much better than other precedures and a like performance with AMD 64.so i f you are going to buy a new computer either you go for AMD FX 64 or Pentium 4 Duo core 2.
thank you!

Allow me to clearly illustrate where processors rank from best to worst:
Dual Core:
Intel Core 2 Duo
AMD Athlon64 X2
Intel Pentium D
Single Core:
AMD Athlon64 (Turion 64 for laptops)
Intel Pentium M (for laptops only)
AMD AthlonXP
Intel Pentium 4
AMD Sempron64
AMD Sempron
A Hamster in a wheel
Intel Celeron (worst processor ever)
Understand that Most programs don't utilize both cores on a dual core processor. The Intel Core 2 Duo is the best processor no matter what, but the Athlon X2 and Pentium D won't give you a big advantage if you don't know how to set the affinity for each core. Pentium Ds also have serious overheating issues.
