dogs that bark all the time do it because they are bored and have lots of pent up energy. if you have a dog you should walk it at least 30 minutes a day, even if you have a backyard. my dog doesn't bark at night, but he whines in his crate (we slipped up and let him out once, and he won't let us forget it) so we correct each whine with our no-no noise (mine is a sharp "hey" and my bf uses the "ssh" noise)... it is getting better :)

It's called DISCIPLINE. Most dog owners do not know HOW to train a dog, they don't go to obedience classes and they are't consistent with discipline for their dogs. Yelling at a dog to be quiet is about the stupidest thing you can do.. you are only barking BACK at the dog!
First, you need to learn how to train a dog, then you need to apply this training and be persistent and consistent with it. Dogs will learn adn WANT to know how to please you.

One suggestion that I have heard of to keep your dog from barking is to shine a flashlight at it when it is barking. The dogs are supposed to hate this kind of attention, they'll learn to associate it with their barking and will eventually cut it out if you're lucky.

The mace in the face worked wonders for my dog. It stopped her from chasing the meter man quite well. Other than that the only other time she would bark out of turn is at an old vw beetle that would go by because it was loud. The cure for that is when a small stone hit her. she never did it again.

Maybe you should jus give them something to make them busy, dog toys do work, if not, punish them a little, and make them see that you dislike what they do, make them feel that what they are doing is wrong, a moderate hit on the mouth will ctch their attention and a angry "NO!!" might do the trick.. You need to repeat these everytime they do it, though, if it works, praise them or give them a treat, so that they'll understand that they did well.

With all due respect, animals are never TAME. WE as a species have domesticated them, and not always unselfishly.
Barking is an instictual thing, and despite anyones belief they don't do it to annoy you. BUT,,, It may be that there's a "message" they're trying to convey, such as a noise they hear, or a nature call they need, for examples.
BEHAVIOR modification might TEACH your pet to do what YOU THINK is appropriate, but I promise you, if HE wants to bark, HE WILL, unless you muzzle him, and I cannot imagine that being an option. TRAIN...sigh... How might we expect to be TRAINED to express as someone else wishes???
CUTE is another word that confuses me? CUTE kinda suggests appearance, not barking. Some of the "CUTEST" dogs I've ever connected with are the loudest most prolific yappers. (NO OFFENSE TO THEM)
I suggest you try to determine the "WHY" for the barking, and make changes perhaps in that the environment changes, IE: Is the animal kept outdoors? Caged indoors? Lots of traffic outside the house? Apartment? Does the dog have water available 24/7, food maybe if he is a "grazer"? Maybe wanting attention? maybe needs a night light? Etc Etc Etc

I think dogs bark for various reasons. Some bark for attention or just needing to go out. My dog barks if anyone comes within about 100feet of my house. I like this because it would scare off any intruders or alert us if someone is coming up to the house. Also saves money on the doorbell hehehehe.
My dog is a very ambitions dog and needs to be walked often. I must admit we do not get around to doing this much. When we do walk her, it tires her out and she is quite for the evening.
I enjoy dogs but the are a lot of work. My dog needs to be let out at least 3 times a day. If we go on vacation then we need to find someone to take care of her.

Good training is very important because you are correct that they certainly aren't self-behaved. Sort of like with kids, consistent discipline is the key. Don't let the dog get away with bad behavior. Training schools and training classes at local pet shops are a good way to learn more about dog training. There are many techniques including reward systems, technology-assisted training, such as with bark collars and such. There are also many great resources online for dog training. Good luck.

My first line of defense with really obnoxious behavior is to get out a squirt bottle tha has a dash of white vinegar added to it. When the dog is barking (or whatever), a loud, "NO!" and single squirt will usually bring the behavior to a halt. Repetition and consistency are the keys.
