I used to keep my computer running all the time but ever since I've heard that there are viruses that can penetrate systems that are left on, I don't anymore. What I do is hibernate my computer. It leaves the computer in a sleep mode and it also draws minimal power. It also leaves all of the pages and applications I was viewing open so that when I log on again, they are there.

I accidentally put my computer in "sleep" mode once or twice and found that I couldn't wake it up! Here's a stupid question: How do I wake it up?

I have a PC. I tried pushing the power button and it didn't work. Hmmm, I wonder what's wrong. I'll try it again tonight.

I unfortunately leave my computer on all day and night. My electric bill hasn't really gone up any I just make sure I turn off the monitor when I'm away or asleep. I'm usually in the middle of a download but lately i've been turning it off because my computer has been getting hott.

Wow. I'm not as tech savvy as some people on this site, so maybe one of them can make a suggestion. I know if you "supe it up" (I hope I spelled that right) it can run hot, too. But, I don't know. Good luck!

Ooh, that's not good that your computer is running hot. Mine was running hot until I replaced the heat sink and fan. But, that doesn't always fix it.
I like to leave mine on during the morning so it can scan for viruses.
Thanks for answering, nice to see ya!

I just try to clean my heatsink and fan out every couple of weeks or so and it usually helps but my harddrives are getting hot no matter what. It's frustrating. I might have to rearrange them so their not so close together.

I've got 2 computers and one of them (older, this one where I'm right now) I never let it stay on all day, I turn it off when I don't need it but I've got another one that is more recent and that one is always on, downloading and running some services I need.

Thanks for answering. I download things sometimes, but not very often. So, I might not need to leave mine on. But, I'm glad you answered.

There are a variety of powersaver modes available in anything beyond Windows95, but I wouldn't recommend them in anything before XP, in 95 and 98 it was flaky and sometimes would not wake up. This still happens from time to time with XP, it is just rarer. One tip is to just turn off your monitor, it is one of the biggest draws of electricity (assuming stadard CRT monitor).

Yes, someone else said that, too. My monitor actually turns itself off. I think I have my computer set up to turn off the hard drives, too, after a while. Thanks.

I have cable internet. I really haven't noticed a jump in my electric bill. But I have my computer set up to go to sleep if I don't use it for over an hour. And I do turn it off at night. That may be why I haven't noticed an increase in my bill.

Thanks. I've been turning mine off during the day when I am either not using it or not at home. I will try the sleep mode, too.

No, I don't leave my computer on all day. I turn it on only if I'm going to use it and when I'm done I shut it down. I too have found that leaving it on for long periods of time increases the electric bill. It seems to give the computer a break too.

I think shutting it down would also help the computer to last longer.

The internet scheme which i have permits me free download from night 12 to 8 in the morning so i keep large files to download at night and i go off to sleep.
My laptop is switched on till 7 in the morning whenever i want to download such large files.

since i am living at the hostel, i don't need to think of the bills. I normally will switch my computer on during the day - from morning to the late night, but will shut if off when i am going to bed. I am understand that it is not good to leave our computer on the whole day constantly - that's why i didn't do this thing.

I just got my bill for last month. Since I have both been turning off the computer and not using the heater as much, my bill has dropped more than 20%. It is almost where it was before I got the DSL.

I don't know, maybe mine uses more power because it's older. I don't usually spend a lot on electricity, but it seemed to be quite a bit higher since I started leaving it on all the time. When I stopped doing that, the cost went down. I also used to have my heater on all day, too, so I know that's part of the cost.

i do not leave my computer turned on all day, except for sometimes when i need to complete a download fast but i use MBM5 monitor so that if the temperature goes over my desired threshold the computer would shut down immediately to prevent further damage.

I guess i'f you need to keep your pc on for a day and not actually be there all the time, just turn off the monitor when you don't use it, after all, it is the monitor that consumes more than the CPU, especially if it is 20++ inches!

That makes sense! If you're on the internet all the time, of course it's going to be on all day. Thanks. :)

I am on the internet alot. But I do turn it off at night when I sleep. The electric bill are really high especially in the winter. I rather have heat than a computer on.
It seems you do virus scan everyday right? Unlike me, I probably should. That thing takes like more than 45 minutes to complete. And Norton Virus program makes everything run slow. It draws alot of power and RAM.

Actually, I scan it every day as well as update it. I have it so it does it automatically. I use AVG and it actually interferes very little with my computer. It runs a little slower, but not much. It takes about an hour and a half to check all files.
I used to use Norton and had a ton of problems with it.

I only leave mine on in the daytime. I can't see where it's good for it to be on constantly. It needs a break just as us humans do, I would think. I even turn my dsl modem off at night. I don't know how much of the electic bill it uses but I wouldn't think that much. I wouldn't leave my t.v. on all night so I wouldn't leave the computer on all night either. Even in the daytime if no one is going to be on it I turn it off in the day. Maybe I'm a freak about it I don't know.

I know, I feel that its a waste to leave it on if no one's using it or it's not doing a task.
