how to identify male and female fish

Depends on the fish, most of them have an anal fin (this can be seen on mollies, some platys, guppies), some can only be told by color, others by their fins (like the male swordtail who had a "sword" at the end of his tail fin), and other do not have major identifying marks.

The pet store man told my son that the male has like a white string, hanging form the belly area.
