I have a serious problem with dvds. I love them. I have hundreds of them all over the house and i have a spreadsheet with another couple of hundreds that i want. How do i stop this need. I know that i shouldnt keep buying them because now they have the new HD ones and if i have 800 normal ones and they stop making them like VHS then it will look silly. I can easily spend 300 quid a month on Films. However I dont drink or smoke so i see it as my enjoyment. Others can easily spend that amount of money on drink and cigs in a month. Am i right? Or am i just making excuses?

hey, nothing wrong with that! like you said, you aren't spending it on booze or other nastiness....why the heck not enjoy your collection! :)
i tell myself the same thing when i buy what most people would call 'silly' items...i prefer to spend 12$ on a comic book then to go out drinking and end up spending 50$ on drinks, which is what most of my friends do! :)

I used to have a HUGE collection of Dvds like that....it felt like an addiction, yet an enjoyable one. I ended up selling them all after a girl dumped me...made me realize she was what I wanted and anything else in life was stupid...my vd collection then angered me for some reason and like in the movie FIGHT CLUB I decided to get rid of my possessions. I sold all of my dvds on e-bay and used the money to pay off my car. Now the want to buy so many is still there, just not as strng due to the new technologies coming out and me not knowing which one to invest in.

Ah, we each have our obsessions, in one form or another. If you can afford them, and find room for them, lol .. then why shouldn't you?
I can't exactly tell you not to, or give you ways to stop, because at last count, I had well over 500 DVD's. And I'm not done, I buy pretty much every new one that comes out. But why not? I have the money, I have the room (sort of lol) and I like having them handy. I also lend them out to friends, my kids have a variety when they want to watch something, etc.
It's one of those harmless compulsions, hurts no one. And look at it this way .... people like you and I are single handedly keeping the movie industry alive, lol.

Hi! Around my friends, I am known as the "Preview Queen" because I love to watch the previews on movies and I always check under "Special Features" on DVD's for movies I haven't seen. Several years ago (long before DVD's) I made a list of all the movies I wanted to see and rated them for the ones I wanted to see the most. THEN I RENTED THEM!! I can see a couple of problem areas with hording DVD - 1. they will soon get hard to store 2. how many times do/would you watch each DVD? 3. the cost will soon add up 4. as you stated, soon you will have spent a lot of money on a pile of DVD's that you don't have room for, don't watch, and something that does not appreciate in value! Since you have so many, you could donate them to a local school or start a trade off with someone that you know. However, I say, if you enjoy them, and can afford them, why not? Something else you might want to consider is limiting yourself to purchasing a couple of DVD's a month, and setting aside the rest of the money you would have spent for a special vacation or donating the money you would have spent to your favourite charity.

I wouldnt worry too much about it.
I mean if you think about it the dvds will last a long time and it saves you from travelling up to Blockbusters all the time. As long as you have to room and you are not paying for them instead of bills then there is no problem.
