What would make people choose career over love or vice versa?

It just makes me wonder why some people would choose to leave someone for their careers. I understand there are some instances when these can go together, but it makes me think what could the reasons be for those who would say they can choose their jobs over love or on the other hand, drop their careers (and even many other major things in their lives) for love. It amazes me sometimes and I cant stop wondering.

i think it is more important to have love in life than a career. love can't buy you happiness, it can only buy you the illusion of happiness. but love never paid the bills either so it all depends on what you want out of life. someone to come home to or a successful career and an empty apartment or house. one person doesn't make a home, two people together do. even if it is a cardboard box underneath the bridge
