Domain/Web Hosting Yadda Yadda Problems

I've just switched hosts for my website. It has been 24 hours, and it doesn't seem to be working yet. I was told it would take 24-48 hours. Well, I did change the DNS settings for where I registered my domain, to my new host. Well, besides not knowing what an "A Record" is and such... I just really need a little advice. I'm not even sure if I need to change the A Record or if I leave it alone. If only I could remember how long it took for my domain to point to the right page when I first got it! To make a badly done description short, if anyone here has any idea about working with this type of thing... message me. Please! I'll be very appreciative for a long time!
