I've heard this so many times. Car salesman really have a bad rep. It seems the everyone has a story to share about how a seedy salesman or dealership tried to cheat them out of their hard-earned savings. I've never had a bad experience at a car dealership, but I'm sure I'm in the minority from what I've heard from others. Maybe it's because we only buy Fords :D (kidding)
Have you ever been sold a lemon? Been cheated by a sleazy salesman? Vowed to never return to a dealership and warned all your friends to do the same?

I haven't had any bad experiences buying a car from a dealership. My husband loves working on cars! I think if he didn't know so much about cars, we might have been ripped off.
I just heard the other day on the news where State Farm Insurance took possession of a bunch of cars after Hurrican Katrina. The told the original owners the cars were no longer safe to drive. Most of these charges were submerged in water. Months later State Farm sold these cars to other people.
Insane...you really don't know what you are buying.

I have been going to the same dealership for the past 20 years. The manager knows me as he has been there all these years. I just bought a new car last August I get offered coffee or coke each time I'm there plus a gift card for free gas. I guess I they like me or it could be because I have bought 6 news cars from him and not my wonderful personality. LOL

Funny. My husband used to be a new and used car salesman. I don't know if I would say ripped off but I have been disappointed by a car I purchased once. I think it was the day after I got it the air conditioner went out. It was a very used car though so it didn't surprise me much. I usually have a mechanic check out a car before I buy it.

I really hate the idea of purchasing car from the bank or the dealers. I always tell my husband better to spend the money n a used well-functional car than paying the huge amount of endless interest. And salesmen, dealers and banks are known to have the same black reputation as lawyers. They do one thing, to rip you off your money.

I can't say I've vowed never to return to a car dealership, but I realize that they are out to make money, and the more they can negotiate in their favor, the more they do so.
I've always hated that they have to know what your trade in is before they'll do any dealing. Or you can say no trade in and then the numbers change when you do decide to trade in.
I just wish you can go to buy a car without all the hassle of trying to bring the price down.

I have only ever bought a Ford, too, and I never got swindled. BUt then again, I used to work for Ford, so I KNOW what the vehicles cost, and dealers COULDN'T swindle me.
However, when people are pressured by comission sales, I think it makes them do anything to make the sale, instead of working with you to find the right vehicle for you, even if it means its not one of theirs.

Touch wood, I have been very very lucky with Car salesmen, I have been to a Ford dealer and a Nissan dealer, admittedly Nissan was the best and he was very fair and gave me a good deal on my old car, he followed through with a courtesy calls to make sure my car was running ok and that there were no problems. I had to take it back and they actually cleaned it for me, as well as mending the problem WITHOUT charge and WITHOUT any degree of fuss. Thankfully I have had never any cause to complain about used car salesmen, but I have heard real bad stories and it's a risky business.

For many years all I could afford to buy were 'old scrappers' (cars ready to go to the scrap yard) .. I used to know just about every car dealers in my area .. and would take anything that was cheap and still had some MOT left .. most of the cars I could afford to buy were real old bangers .. pretty beaten up and just about working ..
I reckon I knew just about every dodge they used to try and sell me a car .. 'great runner' - make sure you have a tow rope .. 'good starter' - buy some jump leads etc etc
Then I joined a disability scheme where we can buy brand new cars and pay a lease for them at a reduced price .. so for the last 10 years I've been running around in new cars .. it is wonderful .. but you know I really miss the challenge of getting a car from A-B when it might break down .. and everything works in new cars .. no more fiddling around trying to get the windows to work, or the washer to squirt etc etc ...

I haven't dealt with it personally but have been there while they were trying to scam my friend. Me and hubby escorted her out of there to protect her.
I used to work at a car dealership (no I wasn't a salesman) I have to say that the bunch I worked with were pretty honest and forthright.

I've never bought a car from a dealer, I usually just buy them used from a regular ole person. Once, I took my friend in to a dealer to buy a car, the salesman saw my car that we drove there with and kept on harrassing me, trying to get me to sell it to him-for half of what it's worth. I told him to shut up and he still wouldn't do it. Also, I just had my car for sale, my relatives neighbor is a car salesman, he told us he can buy it for what it's blue booked at, he told us $1500. So we actually looked it up and it's worth $3500! Like we wouldn't check it out-duh!
I understand that many of them are just trying to make a living, but when I worked on commission, I'd always make more sales if I was honest.

But notice how the procedures run in cycles and everyone has to have it done..yeah.....Right!!!!!

I have had nothing but good experiences with car salesman so I guess that I wouldn't be in the majority of the people that complain. I do know of a few car sales men that have sold people lemons but they later fixed it at their expense.

I have not been cheated or sold a lemon but there is this one carlot that I just dont trust nor do i want to deal with them. they lie, lies that are so easy to figure out. I just looked at my husband and thanked the salesman and walked off. I never whet back to that carlot. The salesman, looked at the van that we was looking at and stepped back a few feet and said, "wow they must have put the wrong price tag on this one. you had better buy it before they find out." LOL then we went to another car and the guy does the same thing only this time he says " I will have to have to hurry if you want this car at this price, while my boss is out to lunch". lol
It was so weird. Like this guy was high or somehting

Ive come across some brilliant sales men, like the one I last used to buy my Ford :o)
He went out of his way to make sure the car was suitable for me, and in a price range I could afford, not just for purchasing but also when it came to repairs and servicing etc. I looked at cars which were dearer than the one I settled on, but this salesman told me he wouldnt sell them to me as they would cost me more in servicing or other, and other cars he rejected as I do alot of long distance driving so need something suitable for that.
When i want to upgrade, he'll be the one I deal with again.
I've been ignored by salesmen who thought I looked poor (I'd walked in wearing my work clothes, I worked as a truck driver at the time) he was toltaly rude and shrugged me off and treated me as though I knew nothing about trucks, mind you, my husband and I owned a Transport business for 6 years at the time and I'd been driving some of them for that long, anyways I was so discusted I went next door and purchased a brand new Semi truck with cash and got a massive frill when I saw his face after they salesman I dealt with told him.
Another car yard I went to years ago, I walked out in the middle of a conversation, thats a conversation between three salesmen over what car I WAS going to buy. I walked in and told them I wanted to purchase a 4wheel-drive, the three men had the nerve to stand there and tell me I was going to buy a much smaller car and began to discuss it between themselves with their backs turned to me, they had in mind a VW, a Ford Laser and a Datsun. Mind you I told them I wanted a brand new car, which was to be used to pull a caravan, can you see a VW pulling a caravan? I dont think so.
I get so irritated at some of these guy's, but then you'll find another like the last one I dealt with, he's made up for the idiots Ive dealt with in the past. 2 years later Ive still not had any problems with my 1998 y/o car except I needed services and the general tyre changes..

I agree, car salesmen do get a bad rap. I've had some very good dealings at car dealerships and have met some very honest salesman. In fact, I was only sold a lemon one time. And guess who I bought it from? My best friend at the time! So go figure...

A used-car salesman is simply a guy who applied... but didn't get accepted into law school. That's probably it... and that's probably that.

I haven't been cheated by a car salesman in particular though I have my fair share of unhappy sales episodes. That said, not all sales people are cheater bugs and many are actually very nice.
Have you worked in the sales line before? Well, I have. In fact, my first job was in sales and I can tell you that we are overworked, underpaid and it is certainly not an enviable job. :P
