Would you Ever Make a really Large Purchase on Ebay??

Engagement Ring - Some people spend big dollars on ebay for things like engagement rings

Ebay is such a fun site to visit and man do they ever have some sweet deals sometimes! I can't help but look at their jewelry from time to time and I can't imagine how someone could be brave enough to fork out almost $7,000 for an engagement ring online (yes I had my eyes on it)! Having said this, do you have a maximum amount that you'd spend on ebay? Do you have restrictions for yourself on what kinds of things you purchase? Would you be trusting enough to spend that kind of money for a ring online? What's the most you've spent on ebay in one sitting and was it worth it?

I know that my dad just shelled out $2200 for a crossbow and luckily he had no problems. It arrived, in tact and on time. So he was tickled with it. He is also the same one that said that he would NEVER use his credit card on the computer. I guess the more he is getting used to the computer, the safer he feels. Now he has UPS coming 1-2 times a week. Dont they use something like PayPal, where the money is held until the buyer can change there mind if they dont get what they thought they were buying. So I think this helps prevent scam artists from selling "fake jewelry" and such. You have time to get it appraised before the money is released to the seller...I think..but Im not for sure about that...

That's not true ... the seller won't sell you something until they have the money in their hot little hands ... which is fair enough as if it is genuine the buyer could withdrawl their money and knick off with the original item. Credit cards and Paypal is the best way of recovering your money incase the worst happens - i've always found it's better to be prepared just in case.

I would rather use paypal than a credit card. Don't you have to give your credit card number to ebay though?

I have purchased small things on ebay but the shipping cost have me backing off on any big purchases. Also, I like to see what I am buying if it is a large purchase. So, no I would not.

I don't think I have purchased anything over $20-$30 on Ebay. I love to look at the jewelery there too. I think I would buy jewelery there but I wouldn't spend over $200. I am thinking of buying a cellphone off Ebay and it will be about $200 I will let you know if I do, how it goes.

I shop at ebay but only small things. For practical reasons, I buy second hand stuff. It's not easy to trust other people, so why risk big amount of money. I heard in the news last night from the local tv channel, that a photographer lost a total of $1600. He sent $800, but the seller said that he did not receive the money. So he was asking again the buyer to send another $800, only to find out that everything is a fraud.

It's ok to purchase on Ebay. Many people are wary of Auction sites, but you should always ensure that the seller has plentiful, high scoring feedback. I've been buying for years, mainly books, cds and videos. I'm looking at washing machines at the moment, the machines are both new and used, and the delivery charges are reasonable. You can use the escrow service for higher priced items. Or pay with a credit card. Items such as clothes and shoes can be tricky, but you can buy from sellers who accept returns. I've got some great bargains, especially coats and shoes, and designer ranges are very popular, and cheaper. A word of caution - don't get caught up in 'bidding wars', you'll probably end up paying much more than an item is worth, just for the sake of winning an auction! Have a look, who knows, you may just find a bargain.

Personally I wouldn't unless the seller had 100% positive feedback and a large number at that. Also I probably wouldn't buy it from overseas. Unfortunately scammers use a lot of the expensive items to try and rip people off - although electrical items are the most popular, jewellery is up there. The most I would ever consider spending in one go is $100 but only because I've read about so many horror stories about people being scammed and losing money over items more expensive than this. The problem is that for that amount, if something goes wrong eBay won't cover the full amount!! I believe they will only cover the first $400 - same as paypal. If you decide to purchase this item, make sure you can pay via a credit card - even if it's via paypal. That way if you end up getting a fake you can contact your bank who provide your credit card and say you didn't authorise the transaction and get your money back!! If you head on over to the ebay forums [under the help section] and post this question there - along with a link for the auction. I'm sure the members there will be able to tell you if the seller is genuine or not - I mean there is still a chance that something bad will happen but i'm sure you'll sleep better if people who know what they are looking for with fakes on eBay have checked it out for you! Good luck!!

I purchased a used Canon D60 SLR camera a few years ago for $1500 on E-bay, and I never had a problem with the camera or the experience.I loved the camera, and it sold brand new for $2200.

I actually purchased a laptop off of ebay several years ago. I was leary of it but it turned out great. Totally smooth transaction with no problems. It was a large purchase for me at over $800 but a great deal at the time. I'm sure you are all looking at me now going WHAT, you spent that much on a laptop on ebay? But they were much more expensive back then, so like I said, it was a good deal for the time. Anyway, I would hesitate. I know my brother bought his girlfriend a diamond ring off ebay and I've bought a pair of diamond earrings before. Just make sure they are a trust seller and you should be fine.

I have gotten more comfortable with spending moderate to large amounts of money on eBay over time, but I would still think twice about buying anything over $1000. I know many people who have bought great musical instruments, electronic gear, or other such items on eBay without incident, so I am sure that it is fine, but something in me hesitates about such a large purchase through the site.

The biggest auction I won was $350, and that seemed like a huge amount at the time. It was very much worth it. No longer does anymore, but I think if there were something I very much wanted/needed and found a good price for it on eBay, I'd probably get it regardless of the price. I don't think I'd have a maximum amount I'd spend, though, no. Not any more then I would in retails stores and the like, anyhow. My brother did sell his car on eBay, and let me tell you, that was a huge amount of money. :) Any transaction that's a large amount, I'd probably do through an escrow service. That's a good way to protect yourself from anything going wrong. I believe eBay has their own.

big purchases on ebay tend might not be so great because they product may be deformed or altered or somthing may not be right wih it! then it is a big waste of money because all you can do is give them bad credibility

I also buy and sell stuff at Ebay. Most of the time, I only buy cheap stuff, items that do not cost more than $20. Sometimes I also buy mobile phones from Ebay. The most expensive item that I bought there costs $400. I always check the sellers' feedbacks whether I buy cheap or not so cheap items. A dollar is still a dollar. But even though a seller's rating is good, I do not think I will buy his/her item if it costs more than $500 and the only way I could get it is if I will have it shipped to my place. If he/she is willing to do a meet-up with me so I can be sure that I will get what I will pay for, then I would buy the item. Just the other night a fellow Filipino was shown at a local news program. He bought a digital professional camera at Ebay. He bought it from a guy who lives in Switzerland. If I remember it correctly, the camera was sold for a cheaper price of $800 as compared to its store price of $3000. The Pinoy sent the money to the guy's bank account. When he informed the seller that the money has been transferred to his account, he denied he received it. The Pinoy received an e-mail from "Ebay" stating that there had been a problem in the shipping of the camera and that he should pay an additional $800 to get it. Not knowing that the e-mail was actually sent by the Swiss guy and not by Ebay, the poor guy deposited the additional $800. Of course he did not receive the camera.

I do not think that it is safe to buy expensive things on Ebay. There are too many diushonest people in the world ready to take your money. Are you really sure the the expensive ring you are buying on Ebay is a real diamond?

I'd be really wary of spending a large amount on something from e-bay, especially if it was soething big like a car that you can't inspect beforehand and on which you're soley relying on the seller having given it an honest description. I think the most i've ever spent way maybe £25?

I had to answer this one, I am an Ebay junky, both selling and buying, though lately we don't do much selling more buying lol :) And what we do sell is usually cheap cheap! Like PlayStation games starting at .99 cents all in tact and played once. My son gets sickly of them and tosses them to me saying mom sell them lol so here i am selling them! unfortunately i find they did not sell why I don't know anyways, I do spend on Ebay from clothing to Pampered Chef stuff, Colognes, and Doggie Stuff, and more! I don't ever go to a store anymore, if I had the grocery store on line I would be home lol! And the store delivered the food i would be all set, they do that in Utah not in Maine lol But, yah i am terrible with Ebay and spending, I have to limit myself to a 100.00 a month, but I got a work at home job, so that limit may raise a bit to like 300.00 a month! here really soon! too here I come Pampered Chef! I usually try to buy from one buyer for everything i want. Saves on shipping and if they have a shipping discount, i like to buy in multiples from one buyer only. so that way i save on shipping and get everything i want and need. And PayPal is a GEM for getting your money back if the seller refuses you! Believe me I had to use them more then once. And got all my money back! No issues or problems. So forking out 7K for me for a ring, i might, if that was the a good ring and it was cheaper then in my area stores and all. I probably would if i had the money to spend. As long as you do it all through Ebay and PayPal payments, and all and their Feedback is good and up there, i don't see an issue. Good luck with it.

There are some items that I will never buy on eBay. Jewelry is on the top of that list. Heck, about 10% of the jewelry stores one walks into sell fake stuff that they claim is real. That is even higher on ebay. Probably in the amount of 75%. I will not spend more than $200 on ebay and even then, it must be a legit item that either fakes can't be made of or the seller is very trustworthy. Generally I buy computer items (not software) and car parts/electronics. I would never buy jewelry, clothing, purses, etc. Basically anything that has been rumored to have fakes online unless I can see the item in person before sending my money.
