There was a new TV show that broadcast tonight right after American Idol called "Smarter Than a 5th Grader?". Adult are suppose to take a quiz that an ordinary 5th grade class takes in order to win cash prizes. (I didn't even bother to watch it.)
Personally, I think the show should have been named "What Did You Learn in School That You Actually Needed To Handle Life?"
I don't know about you, but there was a serious lack of information on how to handle life situations that the skills of reading, writing and arithmatic or history, geography, sociology and lab classes really didn't cover!
Let's remedy this!! Please name a subject for a course that YOU REALLY NEEDED and would have appreciated the information to handle life.

The course would be Methods on Dealing with the Struggles that Life will Present to you.
In times of struggle, after a housefire, after a hurricaine or tornado etc. The helps often fizzles after the initial interest. We have slowly learned things that we could have been aware of and not been in this holding pattern for so long with children. I am sure others would be better in their lives if they had known simple information that could have gotten them back on their feet alot quicker.

I agree. Schools do little to prepare a student for the real world. Sure we can read, add, subtract, and write. But what about managing household finances? Or creating several sources of income, as in starting a business. How about buying and selling a home, or how to find the right area to live in. How about investing and creating wealth?
History is nice, but it gives you little practical living knowledge. There are not enough practical living classes.

Well, I liked the show, and was even able to answer a few of the questions! But you're right, most of that we don't and will never need to know. What did I need that I didn't get? How to fix the toilet, how to get burned stuff off the bottom of the pan, how to get crayon off the walls...

I actually watched the show and enjoyed it. For me , all that I learned at school was useful one way or another , even if just for general culture. Of course there are things that we need to learn to live our lives that isn't exactly covered at school at least at the elementary level, but those things are really something that we can always learn. My daughter for instance is in high school and has a course that covers personal finances, how to manage money, bills etc. She is enjoying it very much. Some other things really have to be learned by experience.
I tend to view my time in school as a useful one and I have used what I learned many times, even things that I thought I would never use.
