I love to make my own homemade mixes. I take pride in cooking from scratch and giving my family quality food without the additives and harmful MSG that commercial food has in it. I used to love hamburger helper but when I found out how the MSG in it was harming our bodies, I quit purchasing it. I began to make my own hamburger helper. Homemade tastes even better than using a commercial mix. The object of cooking this way is to keep our families healthier. The first recipe is for the hamburger helper mix. Then I have posted recipes using this mix. The trick is to have plenty of mix on hand to make your meal on a moments notice thus you are not tempted to purchase a commercial mix. You can store this mix in a jar, ziploc bag or any other airtight container. I hope you enjoy the mix and the recipes. The beauty of using homemade mixes is that you can adjust any ingredient to your tastes. You can eliminate any ingredient that you dislike and add any that you like. "Almost Hamburger Helper" Mix in a Jar 2 cups nonfat dry milk 1 cup corn starch 1/4 cup beef bouillon powder 2 tablespoons onion flakes 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon black pepper 2 tablespoons dried parsley 1 tablespoon garlic powder Mix the ingredients together and store in an airtight jar. Attach the following recipes to the jar: Chili Mac: 1 lb ground beef, browned and drained 1 c water 1/2 c macaroni noodles (uncooked) 2 cans chopped tomatoes 1 T chili powder 1/2 cup Hamburger Helper mix Combine all and simmer 20 minutes or until macaroni is cooked. Stroganoff: 1 lb ground beef, browned and drained 2 c water 1/2 c Hamburger Helper mix 2 c uncooked egg noodles 1/2 cup sour cream Combine all except sour cream. Simmer 20 minutes or until noodles are tender. Stir in sour cream and serve. Potato Beef Casserole: 1 lb ground beef, browned and drained 3/4 c water 6 potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced 1 c frozen mixed veggies 1/2 cup Hamburger Helper mix Combine all and simmer, covered, until potatoes are tender, about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove cover and cook until excess water is evaporated. Quick Lasagna: 1 lb ground beef, browned and drained 1/2 c Hamburger Helper mix 1 onion, chopped 2 c water 16 oz tomato sauce 3 c lasagna noodles, uncooked, broken in bits 1/4 c parmesan cheese 2 c mozzarella cheese, shredded Combine all except mozzarella in large skillet. Bring to a boil, let simmer for 15 minutes or until noodles are cooked. Top with mozzarella. Turn off heat and let cheese melt.

hamburger helper - My family eats a lot of hamburger helper.
My family eats a lot of these because they are quick and easy, and also quite cheap. Like with all things homemade I bet these are so much better tasting than the store bought. Thanks for the great post and recipes.

My husband and daughter both like hamburger helper and I think I would too but I don't like that starchy tasty it has from the noodles cooking in the mix. If I make the noodles seperately and add them later on in any of these recipes will they turn out the way they're supposed to? I'd like to try them if it would work.

I think that that would work fine. The purpose of simmering it together is to blend the flavors into one. so if you do blend everything except the pasta and then add the pasta later, it sould still be great.

I have to say, that is pretty cool!!! I have ever seen a recipe that will take the place of Hamburger Helper. And I bet it IS healthier because they don't have all those things added to it. Thanks for sharing!!!

We used to make hamburger helper a lot but it got boring. I bet if we made our own, it would taste better. I'm sure my boyfriend will have fun experimenting with these. Thanks for another great idea.

Hubby cannot eat Hamburger Helper since he had his gall bladder out. Maybe we will be able to eat this, we will have to try. Thanks for this though, will send them off with the kids when they get places of their own. Thanks for sharing this with all of Mylot.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!! My mom always made HH for us when we were kids, and I guess I grew up with a lot of meals in a box. I am so happy to have a different way to make it now, that isn't so bad for you!!! AND it's from "scratch"--my DH's favorite way to eat his meals. :)

I love my own macaroni and meat, but my son doesn't like it. He prefers hamburger helper. I can't stand the stuff. Although I used to like the chili tomato. Just my luck they don't sell it here anymore.

Thanks for posting your recipes. I shall have to try those. I thought about attempting to make my own "version of hamburger helper". I'll have to try your ideas out! Thanks again for posting.

I rarely buy hamburger helper, but do when I see it for 50cents. I don't know why as I could probably make it for less than that myself. When you look at the size of the package of noodles This is great, thank you for taking the time to post these recipes.
