I think they call that cheating. And without working it out for yourself how do you know it's right. LOL

let we consider that johnny has no money ie 0 when he left the 5th store.so Therefore we know that if he entered the store with x amount of money then x - (1 + x/2) = 0 and therefore x = 2.so johnny left 4th store with $2.
so similarly
y - (1 + y/2) = 2.
2y-(2+y)=2*2
y=6--3rd store
z-(1+z/2)=6
2z-(2+z)=12
z=14---2nd store
a-(1+a/2)=14
2a-(2+a)=28
a=30---1st store
2b-(2+b)=60
b=62.
so johnny's grandma has sent 62 dollars.

I don't know where I went wrong, but I figured them all and came up with no correct answer! So I scrolled down... and don't understand Myth's formula either! Math never was my strong point.

It is said in the riddle that after spending in the last store he had nothing left. So what he spent there should be $2. Then in the previous shops he has to spend 4, 8, 16 and 32. To spend 32 int the first shop he must start with $62. 62 is the answer.
He comes to last shop with X.
So X - (X/2+1) = K
2X -(X+2) = 2K
2X - X - 2 = 2K
X - 2 = 2K
When K = 0, X = 2
When K = 2, X = 6
When K = 6, X = 14
When K = 14 X = 30
When K = 30 X = 62
