It is true that nobody can mess up your life, unless you allow it. Gotta tell you though, people sure do try hard to do it though. It's only for the grace of God that I'm able to tolerate some people---and that is definitely a supernatural thing beyond what I can do myself :)

It is very true in my opinion. We are the only ones who can allow someone to have an impact on our life because we have choices that we can make. As an example, if someone is rude or ignorant, we can become upset with them, but only if we allow that to happen of course. We have the choice as to how it affects us, i.e. we can ignore the person and what they are saying or the alternative is the we get upset and react to whatever comments are made.
Life is really about choices, and we are the ones who are responsible for which path we choose to take. Now some people will take the easy path but others will take the more complicated path. Once we have made the decision as to which path we want to take, we are the ones who have to decide how to get there and what to do at the end of that path. Personal choices are what determines where we go, how we get there and how much the "voyage" will be allowed to interfere with our goals in life.

There is no difficulty that enough love will not conquer;
no disease that enough love will not heal;
no door that enough love will not open;
no gulf that enough love will not bridge;
no wall that enough love will not throw down;
no sin that enough love will not redeem...
It makes no difference how deeply seated may be the trouble;
how hopeless the outlook; how muddled the tangle; how great the mistake.
A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all.
If only you could love enough you would be
the happiest and most powerful being in the world...
