Is "Nuclear Weapon's" a way of protecting your country....??

As number of countries are producing lots of Nuclear Weapon's to strength up the defence but is it a way of defending our country or destroying the mother nature when it happen "Horishma".Give me your suggestion on this topic.

I think it's more of an offensive weapon rather than for defensive purposes, something to use to gain advantage over other countries without such power, to be at par with those that have them.
