Treatment of Hemorrhoids

I am about 8 months pregnant with my first child and I just developed my first external hemorrhoid yesterday (it's hard and very tender to the touch and very uncomfortable to sit down). What can I do. I am going to call the doctor this morning as well but what would you suggest that I do at home for treatment and to reduce and eliminate this sore?
