My Mom who is 63 years old dreams of learning to drive. She says she's still capable to be attentive and react in time. Have you known anyone who learnt to drive at that not so young age?

I feel that if the person is capable of driving then the age should not be a factor. People need to worry more about those that drink and drive. I know some seniors that are excellent drivers and even do better than some of the young teens.

it is true that the good thing about oldies driving is, they are responsible ones on the road. they know that they have to take extra care so as not to be erratic with their driving. let us give these seniors a good fighting chance at the things that they want to pursue.

Yeah, there are so many young people on the roads who are too nervous and they drive like crazy. Especially with this "hot" kind of temperament...

My grandmother didn't learn to drive until she was in her mid 50's. When she was younger she never learned because she married at a young age, and was too busy raising her children, so my grandfather was the one who did all of the driving. My grandmother was a housewife, and never worked. And to this day she still hasn't. However about 10 years ago, my grandfather suffered a stroke, and lost the ability to drive temporary. My grandmother, who had never been behind the wheel of a vehicle, had to learn to drive. She went to get her license, and they failed her. I could see why though, she was a bad driver, she just couldn't react fast enough. She was always on the yellow lines, and always wanted to be bumper to bumper with all the other cars. After about a month, she went to get tested again, they let her pass that time, but I still couldn't understand it. Her driving really didn't improve. I think the reason they passed her was because of the situation she was in. They may have felt bad for her. Today, she no longer drives, thankfully. She only had to drive for about 6 months. I'm not saying that it is a bad idea for older people to drive. There are many of them that do a very good job, and have no problems. Those who are older and driving, but are having problems, are the ones that worry me. What would happen if a child ran out into the street chasing a ball, and your reaction time and attentiveness wasn't the best? I know that can happen to anybody. I was just trying to show the cons of driving while older. IF the person thinks they can do it without a problem, more power to them!!!

Thank you for responding! I agree with you, it's up to the person himself to decide. If he feels he's attention and ability to react are still good, then why not. Here in Israel I see lots of elderly people driving! Probably most of them (if not all of them) started to drive 30-40 years ago, so they have profound experience.

I passed my driving test first time just before I was 5o , I am now almost 65 and I just love driving , I truly relax when I am driving , I don't think 63 is too old to drive , My grandchildren love to go with me in the car , the eldest is 17 and she is learning at the moment , they think I am "cool " so good luck to your grand mother xx

i think the older person may learn better. most people learn as kids and they dont think everything through all the time but a older person has more wisdom. as long as they can pass the test it cant hurt.

do not judge your mother by her age. see if she can pass the tests that has been set by the office which takes charge of licensing. they know better than anyone of us when it comes to things like this. if she can pass the tests, then good for her. the problem is, if she cannot pass it. what do you believe will be her reaction towards it? you must have some plans regarding the taking place of a scenario to this effect.
